Photos on a Walk

A winter landscape.

Looking down towards the olives and grapevines
The olives are being trimmed and the branches burnt.
The fire ban will begin soon

Another view from my walk on the road above
A small family plot of grapevines
They should be trimmed by now, ready for Spring growth.

Up at the ruins of the
Temple to the Greek God of the Seas, Poseidon

A 'dig' in the olive groves
All this area was a port city with Temples and markets, houses and shops.  Now its olive groves with goats grazing.  Swedish archeologists come and dig for a couple of weeks every summer.  Slowly we are learning more about the area.

An olive tree surrounded by ancient stones

  1. I really like the last photo of the olive tree surrounded by ancient stones. If they could speak. You live in a magical place LA.

    1. That olive tree has a huge trunk. Must be many years old, though not thousands. It made a great photo

  2. It must be fascinating living in a place with so much ancient history. As you know, NZ is such a young country and we have nothing like that here.

    1. NZ has such beautiful scenery, bush and beaches though.

  3. Why are certain Olive trees enclosed and others not? Do the Goats climb into them and eat the fruits? Although I can't see a determined Goat finding that wall much of a deterrent.

  4. No you can't keep goats away olive trees. The only way to keep a tree safe is to get rid of the goats. Goats strip all the lower branches. Can do a lot of damage.
Enclosures are usually to keep other people out.

  5. Are locals invited to any dissemination of information about discoveries after each season's digging? - sort of like Time Team where the locals get head start on the findings after the dig is over.

    1. Sometime in May there is usually a meeting up there to inform us. I must keep an eye out to see if anything is going on this year

  6. I'd like to know how old the olive tree is in the last photo, good to know it's still going, you can't beat authentic olive oil.

    1. It may be a hundred years old. The olive trees up there have huge trunks. They've been around for a while
