Kiwi Carving

A friend of ours has been carving, from wood, bone, anything he can get his hands on for years.  He is also the owner of a K-approved cafe.  We went there one evening, during the summer,  and he was wearing his own handmade maori pendant.

He says that he watched a few youtube videos, especially on how to treat the bone and then started carving.  I've seen his work before and wanted to buy something but he does it for himself and the satisfaction of creating these wonderful pieces.  I have no maori blood, I am not an artist but I can tell his work is excellent.

V  has no maori connection either, has never been to NZ
This is the piece he was wearing that night

Carving on a cuttlefish bone
He's an old friend and is happy to show his masterpieces to me. This one he gave to me and I have it on show inside a clear glass so it won't get damaged

  1. How lovely. He is clearly very talented. Shame he doesn't sell his pieces. I am sure they would be popular.

    1. We all told him he should sell them but he won't. They have art exhibitions in the summer where he could show them but 'no'

  2. It made me think about a Cameo brooch my mother use to wear. It's very clever and so is it's sculptor.

    1. Especially as he had to study from YouTube and do everything from scratch.

  3. What a good idea to carve Cuttlefish bones. They are soft enough to carve quite easily. I'd never thought of using them for that; we always gave to our Budgies!

    1. He's good at what he does. Cuttlefish bones are quite brittle. He gave this one to me and I've got it on show safely inside a glass

  4. I really admire that. I've made a few bone carvings over the yesrs but never with thst degree of detail. Cuttlefish bone carving is interesting. It might be good medium to teach carving to kids.

  7. I am in awe of people who can carve so beautifully, whatever the medium they choose, and I also love the sensuous curves of Maori art, so have enjoyed looking at the combination of both in his pendant and appreciating how much work he has put into it.

  8. Beautiful! Carvers are so clever. My youngest son took a carving class at high school and enjoyed it.

  9. What an amazing carver! Love both pieces. We get cuttlefish washed up here, I usually take them to a friend with birds.
