Classic Easter

A beautiful warm day for a classic Greek easter.

We went to our daughters place to eat. There were so many cars parked all along the route in a lot of places it was one way traffic. Up at our local rural taverna we only got through with difficulty. There were cars parked for 100 yards on either side of the road. Heaven knows how they fitted them all in and they must have spit roasted more than 20 sheep and goats.

Classic photos following.

Cracking red eggs.

Before the feasting

Son in law cuts the Easter bread, made by me

3 spits of meat
Goat, offal and one of kontosouvli, which is pork

And a huge bbqed fish for one of the extended family.

We had four different salads including a classic Serbian/Polish potato salad.  Grilled asparagus and grilled halloumi. The halloumi/cheese was fresh from the farmers market in Nikosia, Cyprus.

Too much was eaten by all, of course.  'Afters', as my father would say, were halvas made by talented grandaughter and many different flavours of ice-cream. We tried the halvas and brought some ice-cream home, along with bowls of lamb and fish.

Today we celebrate Saint George. It's usually on 23April but it falls during Lent, as happened this year, then the feast day is moved to the Monday after Easter.

Kronia polla to our grandson George/Giorgios plus numerous nephews, nieces  and relatives.

Today is also Anzac Day in NZ and Australia. Remembrance Day. I watched live broadcasts of services in Dunedin NZ and Cairns in Australia.  Very moving. I haven't seen a remembrance ceremony in many many years. The national anthems brought a few tears.

  2. Lots of feasting and family and friends together. Didn't realize ANZAC servises might be broadcast here or did you get them off the internet? I'd have loved to see the Cenotaph in Dunedin (home) again if even only on TV.

    1. They had some live services on YouTube. I came in just at the right moment to get Dunedin live. Raining there and raining in Cairns but still a lot of people at the dawn services.

  3. No rain here in Melbourne today, after a foggy start it was sunshine all the way😊
Such a fine happy day you all had, cracking eggs and chomping on enough food to feed 5,000. Loaves and fishes too. I love family gatherings- hope there weren’t any of the squabbles that sometimes erupt at them

    1. We could easily feed the 5000. Don't have enough chairs to seat them all though. And they'd have to use paper plates!!!
There are a few squabbles now and again, usually between the kids. So far it's all blown over sooner or later. Touch wood.

    1. George and the female Georgia. Very popular names here. Lots more celebrating today. Though we are keeping away from the islands crowds today and sending best wishes by phone . Grandson is having a big party with his friends. Too old for grandparents now

  6. Christos Anesti! What a great feast!
We had a wonderful feast too, as we were invited to a post-Pascha party/meat & cheese fest (not nearly as many vegetables, haha). It was so much fun, even though I was so tired. We were in bed by 4 am after the services, but I woke up automatically at 6:30 and couldn’t go back to sleep. But it was wonderful, if exhausting.

    1. My sister in law used to sit and listen to the whole service. We always scuttle home to eat mageritsa. Well done!

  7. That’s some feast
The kids loved cracking the eggs but not so much the eating. Which is why I didn’t bring red eggs.

    1. This feast is really over the top but the meat and fish got divided up afterwards and it's almost finished.

  9. now that's a celebration I'd love to be at. I'm the same with ANZAC Day, just hearing the bugle makes me a bit emotional.

  10. I always get up and watch the Dawn Service for Anzac Day, broadcast live from Wellington. It is a time to stop and remember my family members who fought for us.
I think you have a fantastic way of celebrating Easter. It makes chocolate eggs and hot cross buns fade into insignificance!
