The Navy

If we want to go out in the evening now our first choice is always the little canteen/taverna at the beach below the Navy base.  It's open only to Navy and ex-Navy personal and it's subsidised.  In other words, it's very cheap.

Navy themed paper tablecloths
It's entirely self service.  Glasses, proper knives and forks and a jug for the wine are provided.  Everything else is one use only.  The paper plates, scraps, cans and other rubbish are wrapped up in these cloths at the end of the meal and we throw it all in a large bin on the way out

Sitting right on the beach hoping for a breeze

I did mention that Sofia's taverna had the cheapest greek salad at 5.50 euros.  Well I was wrong.  This salad, with feta cheese is 1.90.

Pork souvlaki
The menu is pretty basic.  Pork and chicken souvlaki cooked on a grill.  The young conscripts there are excellent grillers. It's all well seasoned and tender.
There's tzatziki, fried potatoes, greek salad, pizza and a few other things.  Pork chops, probably bifteki (grilled hamburger), a good selection of beer and wine from a cardboard cask.
Enough to keep most people happy

Obviously if we want to eat out from now till the end of August, this is where we come

Poppi, Papous and Nels

Proud Papous, loves to show off his children and grandchildren to all his navy comrades.

He served at the base here for over ten years,  and planned most of the electrical work at this canteen.  The present Commander was deputy on the base while K was there and tells everyone how valued he was and how dearly he was missed after his retirement.  Big happy smile.

  1. What a great place. No wonder there are smiles all round.
I wish I had the knack of grilling meat without making it as tough as old boot leather.

    1. I could do with an evening there now but it's just too darn hot even for a seaside meal.
Sometimes it's the meat that's to blame but mostly the cook. I don't even try grilling

  2. Oh yes, definitely go there! The food (and prices) sounds just perfect, and I'd drink wine from a cardboard box (and I have!). He does look like a proud grandpa! -Jenn

    1. K says the wine is good and that's all that matters. I add coke zero to it anyway.

    2. Hi Judy. I did wonder about that score. Hope those Lionesses pick up the pace.
Heat has been terrible. Can't last forever

    1. The fires there are horrific. We heard UK is sending empty planes to take the holiday makers home.

    3. From Corfu! I'll have to watch the news. I'm a few fires behind it seems. Greece was doing so well this tourist season. I bet these fires will put a lot of people off. Quite rightly too. Until the temperatures go down and the winds stop you just don't know where the next emergency will be

  7. I think it’s wonderful how even after retiring from the force, the navel staff are still looked after. Even if it’s just a tavern serving cheap food. K can go and be with like minded people, feel appreciated and not spend a fortune for a simple but hearty meal. Bravo!

  9. I picked so many tomatoes today, I am making Greek salad today to go with dinner (left over quiche). I’m putting lots of basil on mine, I just can’t seem to get enough! The skewers look really delicious too! Beautiful family, love the smiles.

  10. I think from memory the navy drinks and bar is much the same here, cheap alcohol. That Greek Salad looks nice and refreshing, perfect for a hot day.
