May Day Eve. I went down the road and cut some daisies and a few wild flowers.
Last year I tied them in a bunch and hung them on our front gate.
This year I managed to form a wreath.
Nasturtiums, our one rose and one lily, lavender, jasmine, a few daisies and wild grasses .
It's a tradition here to make a wreath from wild flowers and in years gone by we made some magnificent ones with the kids. I'm chuffed with this creation.
It's a 3 day holiday and the island is heaving again with cars and yachts and people.
It drizzled a bit this morning but the sun came out and it's 20o today. Very pleasant.
Tomorrow, 1May, it used to be a tradition to have a picnic. Now we are older we have a bbq instead.
Workers will be marching and protesting in central Athens and other big cities.
Here the workers will be very busy serving coffees and Greek salads .
What a beautiful wreath, you are very creative !
ReplyDeleteThe weather is warming and it's lovely to see all of the wayside flowers in bloom.
May Day used to be the time the school children danced around the Maypole in my village and across England, happy times, forever etched in my mind.
Happy May Day to you dear friend.
Hugs,
~Jo
Hugs to you too Jo. It will be interesting to see what bloggers have to say about Mayday traditions these days.
ReplyDeleteLovely wreath. Enjoy your May day. F will be gardening to try and get the place in shape before we disappear in long grass and bindweed.
ReplyDeleteIt's perfect gardening weather here. Cloudy! About time for clean up here too.
DeleteBindweed. Sounds nasty
And now no doubt your town is getting busy with tourists. Love the wreath, I must make one over Summer when it comes here.
ReplyDeleteIt's very busy with tourists! At least it's not too hot yet
DeleteWhat a pretty collection of wild flowers. We don't yet have anything quite so colourful out yet in our garden.
ReplyDeleteThere's loads of colour at the moment but they're already beginning to fade. I'm enjoying the colour for now
DeleteYour wreath is beautiful :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks so colourful. I like it too.
DeleteYour wreath is very pretty and colourful, what a nice custom.
ReplyDeleteIt still is a popular custom which is so nice. There will be wreaths everywhere today
DeleteYour wreath is beautiful
ReplyDeleteSpring has definitely sprung at your place
Yes it's spring all right. I hope it stays for a while
DeleteIn France people give each other small sprigs of Lilly of the Valley.
ReplyDeleteI remember you saying that in days gone by. Its a wonderful tradition. The lily of the valley has such a great aroma
DeleteMay Day was for a procession for Our Lady when I was at school carrying a statue through the school grounds and singing. May Day has not been a holiday in the UK for that long and we don't have labour or military marches. In fact many self-employed around here treat it as a normal working day.
ReplyDeleteI don't think its any religious holiday here which is unusual. I thought some parts of the UK still did may day dancing and the weaving of ribbons round poles.
DeleteFrance had enough protesting and throwing of firebombs for the rest of europe. I haven't seen the news here. There were protests I know but haven't heard about any violence
A lovely wreath and a photograph to preserve it's memory. The darling buds of May.
ReplyDeleteThe wreath was bright and cheerful which is what I wanted. It will stay on the door till June. Or it should
DeleteHawaii has a modern tradition of May Day being Lei Day.....that means you wear a lei and also there are lei making competitions which are always lovely to visit. I was in Greece 15 plus years ago in May so I remember seeing the wreaths and thinking it was so like Hawaii on May day. I like that you make it from wild flowers and your wreath is lovely.
