What's Up

-  3 Xmas boats

K is checking out the little boats which we deck out with lights each Christmas.  He's looking at the lights and checking them twice.  3 years ago we had one fishing boat, or  kaïki, hanging from the wall.  Now we have 4 little boats.  Just about time to light up.  I don't mind these being on show now because they're a greek tradition and I like seeing their friendly lights around the house.  Of course we will have a  Christmas tree too.  K will be trying to shorten that and downsize. Space is limited.

- Carpet day

At the beginning of the week we put down our big carpet which covers the tiles in the sitting area and I put down smaller rugs in the bedrooms.  We needed them.  The weather suddenly changed and it got damp and rather cold, for us.  17-18oC.  Not cold enough for a fire yet.

- Marathon

For Niki Mas, our niece and marathon runner

The yearly re-run of the original marathon took place on Sunday.  The marathon is a 26.385 mile (42.195 kms) race from the village of Marathon to the big stadium in central Athens.

The first marathon was run by Pheidippides in 490BC who ran from the battle of Marathon to Athens to announce the Athenian victory against the Persians.  Whereupon he promptly collapsed and died.  So the legend goes.

This year 21,000 athletes, or thereabouts, from all over the world took part.  The Authentic Marathon, as it is called, is not the only race.  There is also a 10km, 5km and a 1.2km children's run.

Niki is long distance runner  and one day we'll be cheering her as she finishes the authentic marathon in Greece.

Angela just reminded me you're named after Nike, the Goddess of Victory. Go Niki. She's smiling down on you

- Xmas knitting

Most years I do a bit of xmas knitting to give away,  things like socks or cowls (neck warmer), scarf or hat, fingerless gloves,  Xmas stockings or even bags and little purses, odd looking g-nomes, sometimes in red and green, sometimes in whatever colours I have leftover.  This year I'm at a loss what to knit or crochet.  There are all sorts of silly ideas out there like water bottle holders, mug warmers, hotwater bottle covers, tissue box covers.  Useless clutter.

I was thinking of knitting or crocheting a Xmas vest (sleeveless top) for myself in red and green. Crochet is faster.  Would I ever wear it? Perhaps on Xmas day. And that's only 40 days away.

The 40 day Orthodox fast for Xmas begins today. We won't be fasting.

- Rain

Yes, it rained.  For 2 days.  Slowly and steadily.  Ideal rainfall for the garden and the olive trees.  There will be photos of the greening of my garden in the next week.  The 4 leafed clover should appear and start taking over very quickly.  And nasturtiums!  My favourites

We also had a leak which we are not so happy about.  This leak has been 'fixed' 3 times in years gone by.  There was a broken roof tile. The water drips down behind the fridge and over a wall plug.  K has been busy sorting that out.

- Flu Jab

I'm having a flu jab this year.  K is not so sure.  We can  get them done at the chemist for free.  I shall go down tomorrow.  I think the prescription is just for the flu and not a covid shot as well.  I don't want another one of those.

  1. With the name Nikkie I’m sure the goddess of victory will be smiling down on her. The weather these days seems to just flip. No slow heating up or cooling down.
I’m looking around for a boat to light up. I’ve not found one as yet. For crocheting. Maybe some granny square blankets to use while sitting on the couch. Granny squares work up quickly

    1. I hadn't thought about her name. Nike, personifying Victory. Yes!
I've made so many granny square blankets over the years ....the grandkids all have one. There's one over the couch and 2 more spare. But yes, I love making granny squares. That's probably the way I'll go. I've got granny square bags and a purse. They are easy and restful to make

    1. Sunday it was cool and dry. Good for a long run. The marathon was won by a Greek and the first woman across the finish line was also Greek. Great rejoicing

  4. P used to run marathons in his younger days. No more though. I admire your Niki for her stamina in taking part and wish her Victory too.
I have been invited for my Covid booster next week and am unsure whether or not to have it. Most of our friends have and are surprised that I am not keen. I still haven't made up my mind.

    1. I've never had bad reaction from the covid vacc but some people around me insist they are still suffering from strange side affects. I'm sceptical but don't see that it really helps much. I've had it twice, a short bout of flu.
Marathos are very long distance. You need to be dedicated to reach the finish line. Niki is and I'm sure so was P.

  5. I keep getting texts to have my booster for covid but I won't be going. I still can't believe they said it was over and that was that.

    1. Yeh, the worst is over. If you have covid here you just stay home for a day or 2 and carry on.

  6. I had my flu shot together with the newest covid shot a few weeks ago. I have never had covid and try my best to keep it that way. In my forties I ran seven marathons and know how much training it takes. Good luck Nicki. Gigi

  7. Well done Gigi. You need to be strong in body and mind to run all those miles. I watch Nikis training on Instagram. She's not giving up.
I have an idea last years flu shot was a double shot. I've had it twice, very light doses. As for the flu, I don't know why I bother. Haven't had the flu in years. Our doc reminds us and writes the prescription so I get it done.

  8. Good luck finding something to knit/crochet - although you may be running out of time a bit! The end of the year seems to be approaching awfully fast :)

    1. It has to be crochet. I'm a very slow knitter. Still dithering.

  9. I love the little boats...so cool.
I tried to learn knitting once, but I didn't get on. I think I picked the wrong yarn, it was very fluffy and constantly tangled. I still have my crochet needles, although it's been a long time since I've used them.
I had my flu jab a month ago, because one year I was really sick with the flu and was out a week. Not to mention it was no fun at all :-)
    Go Niki!!!

  11. Making anything to a set time…..must be finished then…..kills any joy I get from making. I’m slowing down with this baby sampler I’m xstitching I know it needs to be done but can’t muster up the energy.
We had both jabs this winter just gone - COVID is still around but I’m wondering about how necessary it’ll be next year. I’m now in ‘that age bracket’ they were calling vulnerable- that’s enough to make you rebel and say stuff it!

    1. I love that phrase. 'Stuff it' . No one's gonna order us around!
I think I'll give the Xmas knitting a miss. I thought of a long elfin cap but I've already made 2 of those though heaven knows where they are.
I'm dithering. I've had the wool and needles out in front of me for 2 weeks.

  12. Here for some reason there are now only flu shots, and covid is called Corona here. I wonder why.

    1. It's called Korona virus here too!! Another similarity between our countries.

  13. I've been getting the flu jab for 2 years now here, it hasn't prevented me getting sick but it has made the rate I've gotten sick a lot less than I use to get in previous years. I hope you will notice a difference.

  14. Read up on Sulphate of Aluminium for your hydrageas. If you add it to the soil before the hydrangeas start to flower, the flowers will turn blue again.
    I love the boats!

  15. I love the boats, how nice it will be to have them decked with lights. It sounds as though you are busy! I have yet to swing into action. The only thing that I've done so far is to thinly slice some oranges and dry them to use as Christmas decorations. No great effort involved!
I've had both flu and covid jabs - better safe than sorry.
Well done to Niki and the Greek winners, I'm in awe.

  16. A very nice photograph of this replica of the ancients greek ship. They had a very curious and interesting design.

  17. Ooooh, a shout out in my favourite blog! Thank you, I feel quite famous now :)
I think Wolf and I will get flu jabs next year, as we both got taken down by Influenza A this winter and it was nasty!
