Greek BBQ

A warm autumn Sunday.  What to do?  If you're greek, or otherwise, your mind turns to a leisurely day with friends, food and drink

We are still using, very carefully, our small summer bbq.  The fire ban isn't lifted till the end of October.

The octopus gets hung out to dry.  I won't be hanging any washing out here for some time to come!

First the bread goes on the barbie

And then that octopus, or in this case some tentacles thereof.
First course is ouzo with grilled octopus.

Green peppers, brought by our neighbour straight from his garden
With bifteki

Seasoning for the chicken
Dried oregano, salt and pepper

Grilled peppers and village sausage
Peppers were skinned and deseeded and eaten as-is

You can see why it is called village  sausage, simple and homemade.  The mutton is roughly cut with small lumps of fat.  This one was very plain seasoned, just salt and pepper I would say.  Often they have cumin or orange zest.  The plainer the better, though sometimes you wish they had added a little 'something' to mask the aroma of the animal involved.

Fatsas (funny-face) waiting for his share of the sausage

There's no greek bbq without a greek salad

The barbie was lit at 11 and we sat and ate and drank and talked till 7 in the evening.  I don't think we solved any of the world's problems but we surely were able to forget about a few of them!

  1. As I sit here looking outside looking at mountains of snow that we have had to shovel in the last week your bbq looks very inviting!!

    1. Oh no. A little snow would be 'wow', but enough to shovel and this early in the winter, that's cold. Hope the sun blazes down and melts some of it. Wishful thinking I suppose

  2. You live in another world far from our Irish wind and rain LA. Thanks for showing us a glimpse of your Greek paradise. The sausages and ouzo sound great too.

    1. Yes, it's still autumn here. Winter is a month or more away. We are making most of the warm weather.

  3. Yes, the forgetting of those world problems so important for sanity right now. A friend just sent me a funny about clocks going back to the effect of "I don't want even one more hour of 2020". More hours of your bbq on the other hand....

    1. The world has gone crazy. By the time I had finished clearing up last night I was just in time to watch the 8pm news. First they had Erdogan spitting vitriol and then the record number of virus cases. I was ready to pick up my glass again and finish off the ouzo!

    1. It was a lovely day and surprisingly for such a marathon, not too tiring and not much to clear up afterwards. We're enjoying these days while we can

  5. And here in Melbourne wind (aka gales) and rain have been the feature of the weekend.....and cold temps. Spring took a day off and let Winter have a turn again. Barbie days can’t come soon enough.
Yours looked ‘comfortable’ as they should do. Here’s to you having a few more before closing time

  10. I was just planning to clean my BBQ, and put it away for the Winter. I'm living in the wrong country... our sausages are ALL pork, and I can't even buy minced lamb.

    1. It's hard to find minced lamb but the butchers will mince it if you ask. A lot of the sausages we eat are home made and the meat is minced by hand I think. In the supermarket now we do find beef, lamb and pork sausages. Mainly, but not all, pork

  11. What a lovely way to forget about the woes of the world, even if just for a short time.

    1. I really did forget those woes, until I went inside and turned on the news. I turned it off again.

  12. That does look a cosy patio and lovely happy place to gather. Good things on the BBQ. My BIL was a butcher and out of his shop come the best British sausages, can't buy a sausage in the USA with that kind of flavor, not that there aren't a lot of variety of sausages here.
