Photos of Summer

It's very hot again, the meltemi winds are strong and don't bring much relief.

Greece is a raging inferno.  Uncontrolled wildfires have destroyed homes, lives, villages  in Northern Greece and now fires are burning out of control around Athens.

Skies are dark here and ash blows in from the east but so far the island is safe.

Our local watering hole
We have some shade from the intense heat under a sprawling tree which reaches out over the shallows

On Sunday the place was packed with cars and bodies.
The last few days the forest roads have been closed off and no-one is allowed up here except residents.  The beach has been empty.  Only the local crowd that gather every year.  K has company to gossip with as they all bob about in the sea.

The forest areas are out of bound for everyone and fire patrols continue with the Council, the Navy School, the Fire Deparment and Volunteers patrolling day and night

Just before the lock down we had a family bbq.  But NOT a bbq on coals.  The grilling was done on an electric grill placed inside the big old bbq.  It worked very well.

Octopus and ouzo were the main menu but K would never stop at that.  There was enough to feed 3 families and have a few leftovers.  As usual.

Looking toward the main town and the blue and white clocktower

Coffee by the sea.
A small fishing boat

Trying to stay positive in the face of heatwaves, fires, earthquakes, flooding, eruptions and wars all over the globe.

The wild goats have arrived for their evening drink.  I can hear them climbing up on Vaso's stone walls to get at the olive branches and their rank smell is drifting in through the open window.

  1. The whole world seems to be on fire.. or else flooded. It is like an apocalyptic Hollywood film from an earlier decade.

    1. There has been terrible weather this summer. And it's all there, right in front of our eyes

  2. You really do paint a most evocative picture of life on Poros. The sights, sounds and smells you describe make me feel as if I´m back there again.

    1. Keep that in your mind. What you think Is. So they say 😊

  3. Everytime we turn on the news it’s all natural disasters at the moment. It feels like it’s never ending. We are already being warned about the bushfire season. We tend to keep the place clean and our wood pile is away from the house
Fingerscrossed we don’t have bad bushfires this year. Unfortunately we always seem to have one or two idiots who think it’s funny to light fires

    1. Yes, most of the fires seem to be deliberately set unfortunately. And even with all these fires every year people here don't seem to realise how important it is to keep land and verges clear

  4. Makes you wonder what is going to happen with all the fires, floods etc going on, hoping the fires stay away from your island and you all stay safe.

    1. I think we are OK for another summer. The mayor is serious about patrols. But I have a bag packed and ready by the door

  5. As Jaycee said it seems as thought the whole world is on fire. We are wondering what we will get come summer. We had no summer this year just rain and wind.

    1. At least your fire risk will be low but now you need a nice sun shiney summer

  6. I think today is the last of our 40 C days. It has been really debilitating. I can work outside until about 9 am, then we stay in the shade for the rest of the day. Thank goodness for the pool, even though the water is 30 C.

    1. That pool water is very warm! But still must be delightful to dive in. 40o is over the top. This week we have similar weather. I hope its the last of this summers heat waves

  7. It seems that some people are crazy and start the fires deliberately.

  8. ".. I have a bag packed and ready by the door" - that's very sensible of you!

  9. We feel for all those affected by fire - the warnings about high risk of fires this coming spring/summer have just begun down here. There were burn offs going on before we came up north because of all the strong growth due to the constant rain.
And yes as Angela mentioned- apart from lightning strikes it’s usually the fire bugs who are to blame.

  10. I hope you get a nice gentle rain that will help put out those fires. We live in an area that is arid and fire danger seems to always be high. One of the biggest fires we had in the state was started by the forest department as a prescribed burn. No one was happy about the lack of common sense (it was windy).
The photos are so pretty, and make me long to go to Greece! I am planning a trip, but not making any for-sure plans yet. First I need my passport! Take care, my prayers for all of those suffering from the fires.

  11. We just love the blue of that water. It is a good thing that areas can be closed off to reduce fire risk. I didn't handle the summer heat well living there but the lifestyle it promotes is truly enviable.

  12. Coffee by the sea sounds great to me. I'd have a coffee with you one day for sure. Sad about those wildfires, they seem to happen every year, I'd be devastated if it happened here.

  13. Is getting in the water cooling? I hope so. You like in a beautiful place.
