Meat, Meat. Lots of Meat

 A Winter's Bbq..Thursday last

Tsiknopempti. Smokey Thursday.

Round 1.........

One of the most important days of the Greek carnival season. It's the 2nd to last Thursday before Lent. The tradition is to eat mounds of lamb chops, grilled or roasted, pork pancetta, sausage and chicken pieces.

With Greek salad, Pitta bread and bowls of tzatziki.  And litres of wine, fine and not-so fine.

After the food and wine there may be singing and dancing.

Me and Jan enjoying the finer wine
Beside a roaring fire
It was a freezing day. Around 7oC
Far too cold for greek island dwellers

K with a wee dram of the 'other' wine

This is 'meat eating week'.
Next week it will be cheese, dairy and eggs. And then along comes the 6 week fast.

Round 2
In the evening family, a couple of grandchildren, came for more meat. Lots of meat. Far too much.
They took home a baking dish piled high. We are still finishing off our share.

It's the tradition says the traditional part of the family.

And granddaughter Luli made a big dish of what the Greeks call 'mosaiko', chocolate and crushed biscuits.
Boy was it good. I ate a big piece. And I shouldn't have. Especially after all that meat

Meanwhile back in Athens...

The rest of the grandchildren were grilling out on their balcony
Tall grandson is the one in the middle

  3. Crikey, if he’s tall - how tall is his mate on the left? Young lads always have a cheeky look about them don’t they. Life is good!
    Are they all yours?

    1. I hadn't realised how tall his friends are. He's actually the shortest. He's the tallest in our Greek family though his sisters are just behind. This younger generation are taller than the last by at least a head.

  4. We grew up with a similar cake...fudge cake. Yum. It was always made as a slice....I'll try it as a loaf shape

    1. Natalia did make it as a cake shape but I always made it in a loaf tin. Either way it's easy and everyone likes it. I made them take the rest of it with them. I would have scoffed the lot. Out of sight out of me nd

  5. I think K would get on well with my son Kimbo. He's a big meat-eater (bigger even than me), and is at his happiest in front of a BBQ.

    1. Oh yes. Theyd get on like a house on fire. A BBQ and a glass of something, preferably lots of chat too and all is well

My arteries are clogging up just thinking about all that meat
Not sure when Greek Easter is. I’ll have to Google and find out. Enjoy your nice wine. Some of the home stuff is terrible

    1. The wine is Greek sauv blanc. Damned expensive. Worth it with good company who appreciate it.
Greek Easter is the end of April. Not sure exactly when, or when the western one is. Do t want to think about it yet!

  8. We make a similar cake here, and sometimes we make chocolate balls with the same ingredients, either way it's very tasty.
