Garden Stuff

In the morning now I sit  outside.  I'm still drinking hot coffee but it is almost hot enough for the frozen kind.

I observe my small garden from my chair and after coffee I potter, do a little watering, take a stroll with secateurs in hand, pick any lemons that have fallen

My nasturtiums.  They won't last long once the scorching summer heat begins
I love the way they are mostly yellow but now and again an orange flower pops out.  That's the rusty old wheelbarrow.  I did have a pot in it but I rather like it falllen amongst the greenery

The amaryllis in all its glory

Garden decor

Northsider Dave was having a problem in his Irish garden with slugs and snails and Sol, in her Scottish garden, suggested a way to get rid of the snails in my greek garden was to serve them Mythos, a  greek
beer.  I didn't ask, why Mythos?  We never drink the stuff, its Alpha beer in our house or Amstel.

I juggled/struggled with the thought of drunk snails.  There are dozens in our garden.  In the fridge I found another greek beer,
Vergina*, and set up a photo shoot.  In the end I couldn't bring myself to waste a good can of beer and the Vergina went back into the fridge.  If anyone tries it, let me know what happens.

*Vergina
Vergina is a village in the Greek province of Macedonia near the site of  three royal macedonian tombs, one belonging to the Phillip, father of Alexander the Great

  1. Great photos. I find any sugary drink like fizzy pop or beer that you don't like will suffice to give them their last drink. I am having to refill my slug pubs. I don't if the slugs and snails are drinking it all aand escaping or it's the Irish heatwave evaporating the free beer๐Ÿ˜Š?

    1. It's got very hot now and all the snails have sealed themselves up for the summer. I should have dunked them in the beer to see what happened. One day I'll have to try just out of curiosity

  2. Your garden is looking very bright and colourful.
Our temperatures have now fallen to around 14C after the previous few weeks' warm weather. I am wearing lots of layers to keep warm!

    1. It's a great time of the year. The roses are blooming too. Everything is green an colourful. Till the first heatwave.
      Getting hotter here.

  3. lol giving the snails beer to deter them is almost as good as placing stuffed toys around your garden to deter possums from feasting on your roses:)

Not allowed to harm the little buggers....they're protected species here....unlike across the ditch!

    1. Possums are protected? But you must have millions. Try the beer around the roses. The little critters will be staggering all over the place

  4. Loving your wheelbarrow. Tigger used to ride in ours between house and allotment (called it the HGV - head gardeners van). The nasturtiums are fantastic. Slugs and beer: it doesn't kill them - just attracts them into your traps (assuming you are using a trap rather then just putting out beer for them to drink). The image of drunk snails rampaging about the garden....

    1. Just getting them all in one place would be great. We could catch them and eat them. But I noticed they have gone into hiding in this heat. Wait until winter and I'll start the campaign!

  5. Here, too, the flowers dry in a 40-degree heat wave that will last a week.

    1. We are going to have very high temps this weekend. I think it will be the end of our greenery .

  6. Do a Search on How To Trap Snails. You will find lots of ways, I'm sure. Seems any old beer would do, not one you like yourselves.

And they drown, don't they? "Die happy" and all of that. -grin-

Delightful start to your day. Actually, whatever our morning routine, it's delightful to us, isn't it?

Love your nasturtiums. Enjoy them, while they last! -smile-

    Gentle hugs,

    1. I really do enjoy the nasturtiums. They are taking over part of the garden and are a very pleasing green with those colourful flowers . Summer means basil and geraniums, not much else

  7. I enjoyed the pics of your lovely garden! Maybe you could switch to ice tea in the mornings when the scorching comes :-)

    1. It won't be long before I will be drinking coffee full of ice. I prefer hot coffee but not in the heat

  8. That wheelbarrow looks quite romantic with the nasturtiums tumbling all around it.
I too had visions of drunk snails careening around your garden - it would make a very funny cartoon!

    1. The wheelbarrow is old and rusty but is also aesthetically pleasing. A bit of greek antiquity

  9. Love, love the amaryllis. We do the beer thing here but we only get slugs. Never seen a snail, except in a restaurant!!

    1. You're lucky not to have snails. We do eat these but they need a lot of preparation. So much easier just to order them in a taverna......when they open

  10. Even though we are in opposite seasons our lemons are just starting and on our morning walk we pass a pot of amaryllis. Unfortunately, my amaryllis got eaten by slugs.

    1. We have loads of snails but fortunately no slugs. The pot where the amaryllis is planted was full of snails but they dont eat the flower

  11. I use 'wildlife friendly' snail/slug pellets. If I didn't I'd have no vegs at all.

    1. They feed on the lettuces in the winter but dont do a lot of damage. The lettuces very good cleaning though or you end up crunching through snail salad
