Sunny Day

Another sunny winter's day.  We are enjoying the Alkyonides days, halcyon days to you.   These are days of sunshine and no wind in mid winter.   We usually have a week or two of them at the end of January and here they are, right on time.

We haven't been down to the waterfront for a 'coffee' for ages so today seemed ideal.  We even found parking so the Gods were definitely in favour of our decision.

It was almost midday, far too late for coffee so I had a glass of red wine.

The best red wine.  I put in my order and the waitress came along with my glass, but there was the owner of the cafe right behind her with another glass (filled much higher) of red wine.  He gave a nod to the girl and she took hers away.  'This is your red wine' , he said.  The other was from an old bottle with dregs at the bottom, not good enough for a discerning drinker.....of red wine!

Friends passed by for a chat.  K passed the time with his worry beads.

At the next table were the daily backgammon players.  The same men play every morning, usually with a band of onlookers crowded the table.

The lottery seller passed through, selling scratch cards mainly.
The people at this table won 5 euros.

Another day I was need of a siesta. Red wine at lunch-time is not such a good idea

  1. That certainly looks like a generous glass full.

    1. One of those glasses lasts me all morning. A very generous serve . I definitely don't need another one.

  2. I thought halcyon days, were simply glorious days. Never knew they referred to a certain time/type of weather. Learn something new, every day, in blog land!

Does he keep the beads, in his pocket? To bring out, when resting?

Have you told us the "why" of them, and I missed it? I doubt that "worry" is the true meaning.

    1. He carries them with him whenever he goes out. They have nothing to do with worrying although the sound and rythym is soothing. Just something to do with the hands. Better than smoking or tapping endlessly on an iphone

  3. Siesta is a common thing here, even without wine.

    1. In the summer heat it is absolutely necessary. Rest in the afternoon till the heat goes down and then start life again in the cool of the night.
It gets to be a habit even in the winter. More wine means a longer siesta and days are short now.

  4. Not a sip passes my lips before 5pm, otherwise it ruins my day. The idea of worry beads appeals; I must acquire some.

    1. I must make no wine before 5 resolution myself. It's easier in the summer. Far too hot for drinking alcohol before the sun goes down.
The clack clack sound of worry beads is not annoying and the motion seems to soothe otherwise nervy personalities though they can be thrown loudly on a table to emphasis a point or shaken at an opponent too.

  5. Looks cold with the men in coats. I enjoy a cafe and a relaxed chat with coffee or wine. It seems quite difficult to convince some of my friends about this though!
