Watching the sun go down over the harbour

Filling up the shelves.  Visitors brought unavailable 'essentials'
Bisto, vanilla essence and the makings of the traditional-to-kiwis dip (reduced cream and onion soup) which only kiwis will understand

What others considered essential
Serbian raki
One made from plum and the other apricots
More drinkable than our strong grappa/raki, called tsikoudia or tsipouro here

    1. Maggi make the soup. It's very hard to find here. Mushroom or chicken are the norm, but it's that strange stuff called reduced cream which gives it the kiwi taste

  2. We make Onion Dip, with 1 container (16 oz.) fresh sour cream, and 1 envelope Lipton Onion Soup Mix (dry mix). Blend in medium bowl... Chill....Enjoy with potato chips. -smile-

    1. Very very similar!!! I would make it like that too but hard to find the soup and sour cream unavailable darn it. Greek yoghurt just isn't the same.

  5. My son brings me Bisto when he goes to England. We also make dip with sour cream, mayo and dry onion soup mix. I was also surprised about the vanilla extract, I thought it was available every where. It's very expensive these days.

    1. That dip it seems is popular all over the world. I'm surprised. Now and again we find some onion soup. I'll have to stock pile when I find it.
Vanilla essence is just so much stronger in taste than our powdered stuff. Makes a big diffetence

  6. I love seeing the maggi onion dip and reduced cream, even better when a squeeze of lemon is added to it. Such a classic kiwi combo

    1. We have a couple of neices in England now and I'm considering my list for their next visit. Hadn't thought about pork pies till you mentioned them. Dust, mince meat, almond paste, golden syrup, so much comes to mind. I'll be writing a new list now Cro!

    2. Dust??? Naaa, don't want any of that. Plenty here. And now I can't remember what I originally wrote. Getting old-ish

  8. I love that dip too! My all time fav. I use brown vinegar instead of lemon juice, do you?

    1. Lots of things you can't get here. I just learn to live without them but if visitors ask them they get a list?

    1. Thanks for reading the blog!
I have a few posts on our time in Crete in the 80s which I never published but have never written about how I ended up here. Maybe it's time!
