February Photos

Our next door neighbour was still harvesting tomatoes till a week ago.  I think this is probably the last of them.  Any left on the plants will have been flash frozen after this last cold spell.  He did extremely well though to be still eating his own tomatoes in February.

Along with the tomatoes there were also a few green peppers and aubergines.  They weren't in a hot house by the way, just in the remnants of his summer garden

Every day there are half a dozen fires smoking away around us as everyone prunes their olive trees and burns off the smaller branches

One of the old deserted looking houses near us.  They are used by extended families when collecting olives or tending summer gardens and most are filled with stacks of dry food for the sheep and chickens or even a pig or two that are penned in the yards outside.  There is the necessary dog tethered underneath though this one does not bark and the chickens scratch between old broken plastic chairs, the remains of rusty fridges, stoves and piles of rotting doors and windows for repairs never carried out.  That's pretty typical.  Nothing should be thrown out but is rarely reused.

The very first sign that the seasons are going to change.

    1. We had a mild-ish winter, only 2 icey storms. I was surprised the tomatoes survived the first. Lettuces don't mind a bit of ice but tomatoes like sushine

  2. Ooh, blossom. No sign of any here yet. Just lots of rain and mud.

    1. Quite a few trees here have blossom. Seems a bit early. Thank goodness not enough rain to make mud

  3. Wow, the remnants of the summer garden in February!! I think I must make a move :-) As soon as mine were done, I had to move on to tomatoes from the store, which are not very good.
Blossoms? That's a few months away!

    1. You're still deep in snow. Your growing season must be totally different from ours. At least you can grow when it all melts away

  4. Different climates mean different harvests. I never cease to admire you Linda, such a change of life when you married a Greek! xx

  5. What a clever man to be harvesting tomatoes at this stage
My tomatoes didn’t do well this year. So a rethink is needed
I have plans. Need to boost production but decrease effort needed. The Greek in me is taking over lol

    1. My tomatoes hardly got off the ground but he is Vaso's son so has all the knowledge of nature, if he listens to his Mama.
Im thinking of putting some seeds in small pots on the window ledge but if they sprout it is what happens from then on that matters. Im not a great fan of gardening but do love to see the results

  6. The tomato harvest has been very good for your neighbour. We have not had a very good harvest either here. Sad to see the house left to go to ruin. Lovely though to see signs of spring coming.

    1. There are so many ruins of houses. Years ago I suppose a foreigner might have bought that and made it into a beautiful blue and white villa and a swimming pool where the chooks scratch. Somehow I think those days are over

  7. How horrible to leave a dog, tied up, all by himself. With just sheep or chickens.

Who feeds the dog? Who keeps him supplied with water to drink?

    1. This dog is typical of most dogs around here. They are tied up most of the time but a well looked after as far as food and water go. Their owners come up every day from town to tend their flocks or gardens or look after the olive trees and the dogs are fed. Not much of a life though. They wont be left off the lead much in case they chase the chickens and goats

  8. We have flowers just appearing on our Plum trees. We also have very strong wind at the moment, which has lasted for two days.

    1. Thise blossoms will have to last through high winds and for sure there will be more rain and low temperatures. Hopefully nature knows what its doing and the blossoms set, or whatever they do

  9. Amazed at those tomatoes in February and blossom already. It felt quite autumnal here yesterday but like summer again today.
