When it's cold, stir up the fire, put on a pot of something, eat and drink.
We didn't get snow in the end, just a couple of flurries but Athens was covered in thick snow and still is in the outer suburbs.
The Acropolis and Parthenon covered in snow
Lunch was fark-ess. Lentils to you.
I ate half, obviously, before remembering to take the photo
I made a cheese pie to accompany the lentil soup.
Some traditional people don't like to eat them 'orphaned'.
We could have accompanied them with smoked mackerel or some salted sardines but there were none in the cupboard and we weren't going shopping.
I also made a banana cake with a couple of overipe bananas. Traditional people do not eat black bananas.
Cooking and eating passed the time. We had power, we had water, we had a pile of wood to throw on the fire. All was well.
Today, Wednesday, the sun is shining. Athens still has major problems in some areas. We watch endless weather reports on our television and get back to normal, doing a load of washing, taking a walk, inspecting the garden and preparing a shopping list to restock the cupboards.
That all looks delicious. I hadn't thought of Athens having snow.
ReplyDeleteThe last time it snowed that much was 2004. It doesn't happen every often.
DeleteBanana cake sounds good. Incredible snowy pictures of those famous Greek landmarks. Thanks for posting the photo Linda.
ReplyDeleteThe Acropolis covered on snow is a rare occurrence. and a tcwas thick snow. Probably all me to Ted now
DeleteHonestly, I must type so darn fast. That spell checker gets me nearly every time and I click publish just as I notice what rubbish I'm publishing .
DeleteAll me to Ted..how do they think these things up
Should of course been
All melted now
Crazy weather. Since I doubt snow in Athens happens all the time.
ReplyDeleteWe are still in Deep Winter. Snow, ice, cold temps. And this makes me want to continue the lovely season of hibernation! With more rest and not much do-do-do.
Of course, any excuse, will do, for me! >,-)
You almost make me want to have a real snowy winter. Hibernation sounds like my sort of thing. Time to read, crochet and write.
DeleteThe only thing wrong with that is the other half pacing holes in the carpet with nothing to do but annoy
What an amazing sight - the Parthenon and Acropolis in snow. Crazy Weather.
ReplyDeleteCrazy weather all right. The sun is shining today, we will probably be in short sleeves by the weekend
DeleteDown here in Piraeus it lasted until about lunch time. The sun even came out late afternoon. Today normal service was resumed (as in, the swimmers returned to the cove!). We're betting the surface layer of water was really cold.
ReplyDeleteI wondered how Piraeus was doing. A friend of ours phoned the next day and said it was still snowing up in the northern suburbs and the snow was thick on the ground.
DeleteI saw some swimmers on the news. Incredible. I hope none of them have pneumonia.
Your banana cake looks wonderful .
ReplyDeleteIt was really banana-ery and moist. I think I added double the amount of oil. I could taste the olive oil just a little but the important person loved it and that's all that matters really
DeleteI regularly buy vacuum-packs of smoked and peppered Mackerel filets. Lovely; to be eaten after the soup of course. I think we may eat our lunch outdoors today!
ReplyDeleteWe buy tins of mackerel now and again but it's just not the same. I think I have bought vacuum packed once and we both liked it but it's not readily available. So much easier!
DeleteThey showed Athens in Snow on our TV News and I thought about you and hoped you were okay. Sounds like you were just fine :)
ReplyDeleteThat cloud of snow just missed us. It was slightly to the east. Loved watching all the snow news and videos friends and family out up. We got the cold and rain
DeleteFakess is definitely one of those comfort foods that is lovely in winter
ReplyDeleteGlad you still have power rug up and have a drink and enjoy being toasty warm
Fakess...I've been wondering how to spell that so it doesn't sound like fake. Now there's a really traditional soup! Traditional hubby lives them with the regga and lots of feta and olives. He was a happy bunny
DeleteThank goodness we didn't lose power. A lot of suburbs further north are still out
I saw that photo of the Acropolis, amazing! Your food is so different to what I'm used to but I suppose if I lived in Greece I'd soon change.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it amazing to see the acropolis under snow!
DeleteNow you know why I love seeing photos of your food! Yours is what I often crave
Cheese pie, yum I"m guessing you use different types of cheese in it? I must try that one, I'm sure it would go down well here.
ReplyDeleteFeta cheese mainly but I did put a bit of leftover Gouda too. I'll repost the recipe
DeleteThere was also a lot of talk here about some snow falling in Jerusalem. I had nothing.
ReplyDeleteThere was a narrow column of freezing air which missed the s and you too. Maybe next year
DeleteOh, cheese pie sounds delicious! My hubby loves cheese. Looks like pie crust with cheese in it? Maybe it's biscuit dough? Any chance of a quick recipe?
ReplyDeleteIt's pastry with a feta cheese, egg, bechamel filling. Somewhere I've written the recipe. I'll find it and repost.
