Local

Another sunny but not sweltering summers day.   We heard our first cicadas yesterday and at night the crickets play their gentle melody.  Hard to believe that it is almost midsummer and the days will start getting shorter.  We haven't even reached those days of relentless heat yet.   Those lazy, hazy days of summer are still to come, 2 months of heatwaves, sweaty nights.  I wonder if there will also be the hustle and bustle of tourists.

Our neighbour has started de-leafing his small vineyard.  The more leaves that are removed the more the vine will give strength to the grapes, or something like that.

Soon these plants will be a mass of sunflowers

Our favourite honey
We bought thyme with a hint of wild flowers
She also sells honey comb, their own honey lip balm, a healing balm for cuts and burns and royal jelly

These may look like a large zucchini but they are a variety of cucumber. Called xyloagouro in greek .  Literally woody-cucumber

They are a pale green and much bigger than the usual cucumber
They are crunchy and full of flavour.  All you need for an ideal snack.  Keep them in the fridge so they are nice and cold.  Simply cut them into long slices, scrape out the seeds and sprinkle them with salt

The green leaves in the middle are called vlita and are the favourite summer green of most greeks. They grow in our garden, wherever we water, from seeds left in the soil.  We are given bags of them by neighbours.  K loves them.  I prefer other greens.  He eats them boiled and served with vinegar (not his usual lemon juice), fresh olive oil and a garlic clove which he will slice raw over the plate.

  1. Your life seems to be back to normal. How good. It is unclear here whether it will start over again.

  3. Those cucumbers have the pale green look of the Apple variety. Round (obviously) pale green with slightly larger seeds than the continental. Slightly different taste as well.
Our days are about to turn- temps will drop as well - then comes Spring!!

    1. I know those round ones. We see them now and again. They're not all that popular. Too many seeds probably. I like the round zucchini . Perfect for stuffing

  6. So what does the woody cucumber taste like? Isn't it funny in Summer that cicadas are always a sign that it's here.

  7. Thyme honey sounds delicious, and I imagine cold cucumber on a hot day would be great too. Enjoy your summer days before they get too hot. With the shortest day here next week we can start expecting some colder weather. It is actually pouring with rain here at the moment :)

    1. It is actually blowing hard today and there is a beautiful cool breeze. Ideal for pottering around and getting little jobs done. You needed some rain but naturally I do hope you dont get too much. Everything in moderation

  8. I’m looking forward to the days getting longer here
I’m busting to get a summer crop in early
Our days have been really lovely. Mid to high teens in temp. But our nights have been freezing.
Hope this doesn’t mean our summer will be extremely hot

  9. We saw woody-cucumber in the laiki the last couple of weeks and did wonder. Will get some now that we know what they are and how to prep them. Thank you for that.

  10. You have such beautiful produce available. I love the way it is so simply presented on the stall! My only problem with eating greens (our garden is swamped with spinach at the moment) is all the washing and cleaning it needs. The honey sounds delicious.

    1. Big problem for all greens. I used to sometimes take big bowls of spinach outside and clean it with the hosepipe.
