A family birthday
Another celebration in the summer of corona-virus
We are free to come and go but with social distancing, lots of handwashing and commonsense. However, already we have new clusters around the country of fresh corona cases as family members fly back from the USof A, Germany, greet other family members in the usual mediterranean cheek-kissing-hugging fashion and then circulate in cafeterias and tavernas greeting long lost friends the same way. Never mind the beach parties down on the island of Mykonos where the dancers and revellers are jam packed like sunburnt sardines.
And in a weeks time the country opens up for foreign tourists. The english, the Italians, the Germans and the Spanish will be welcomed but hopefully only at five paces and with bottles of handwash
In the meantime our family life is back, more or less to normal.
Birthdays and name days are together times
This time it was a birthday.
Setting the long table
The boys doing what boys do best.........
Filling bottles with wine from the family barrels
A 3 1/2 kilo octopus hanging out to dry before it goes on the coals
Of course there was dancing
And birthday cake
Cheesecake, homemade by the girls
The boys turn to fill the bottles
BBQing is thirsty work
And in the middle of all these noisy celebrations there was a zing as my phone received a whatsap message from downunder.
We had another family birthday to celebrate, a beautiful baby boy had just been delivered to bring even greater joy and lots of 'sniff-sniffs' on my part.
We have lots of clusters of birthdays in our family. June has a small cluster, October has another and November-December is a huge cluster of birthdays .
And 26 is a number which pops up throughout the year.
Family!
No one from UK will visit. Greece will put us in 2 weeks quarantine as high risk and returnind hine would need to isolate for 2 weeks or £1000 fine.
ReplyDeleteAs from the 15th there will be no quarantine for foreign visitors. We need tourism this summer
DeleteHome not gone.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about the pop up of new cases, but the birthday party looks like fun!
ReplyDeleteThe birthday party was great fun and something i forgot to note, it was NOT at our house!!!
DeleteAnd here I thought I was taking it a bit far, having a box of wine on my counter - when you have three vats ? barrels? of wine to pour from! I'm glad you are able to get together with family now. I do hope you don't get too many more cases cropping up and I hope tourists are respectful of the rules. Is it the normal thing to have an octopus hanging from your fence? Do you have to do that before cooking it? -Jenn
ReplyDeleteGo ahead and live dangeroulsy, buy three boxes!! In years gone by all those barrels would have been full but actually only one has wine. I 'accidently' forgot to mention that too.
DeleteFor some strange reason if the boys are going to bbq the octopus they hang it out to dry in the sun for a couple of hours first. So it is even tougher than old boots I reckon lol
I hope the virus doesn't get out of control with all the visitors.
ReplyDeleteEven with checks at airports these last two cases got through so heaven knows what will happen with a flood of tourists
DeleteNow is the time to be extra cautious; just look at Sweden! I had to visit my pharmacie yesterday. I asked if there had been any local cases of the virus; still none. Fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed here too. That's all we can do. We have always have masks and germ killers with us but no one is really taking notice of the danger at the moment. the 15th is D Day, as in d for danger
DeleteThat barbeque is looking mighty fine now. We know a cat who'd be right into that - sitting on the front ledge if he could... What a fabulous party. It must be great to have all the family living (and loving) so close.
ReplyDeleteThe bbq is at son in laws/daughter's house. And you are right it is great to have them all on the island.
DeleteAs for sitting on the bbq, well good luck to that. You'd have to fight for the bbq view. There is a very big, fat cat who claims the spot!!!
BBQ octopus. I think I would prefer to just drink the wine!
ReplyDeleteNo trouble. Rough red?
DeleteI wouldn't mind having those barrels of wine at my house. On second thoughts I would be forever filling a glass or bottle😊.
ReplyDeleteYou could just make sure the barrel was next to your chair and all you had to do was lean over and pour! Luckily we have young ones who dont mind running to the wine room
DeleteI love the way it is always the guy's job to cook on the BBQ - I think all summer meals should be BBQs!
ReplyDeleteYes and no. I/we still have to clean up and deal with over-drinkers!!
DeleteIt feels really good to get together with friends and family doesn't it? Nothing like a bit of social distancing to realize how important people are.
