Summer Resort

A long journey yesterday. 4 hours  on the road and then endless trips up 4 zigzag ramps to haul up to our room pillows, bedding, suitcases with clothes, bathroom gear and other bags of necessary paraphernalia.

We are at our favourite Navy resort for 2 weeks. Cheap and cheerful.  They provide a room with 2 beds and mattresses, bathroom, a cupboard and a small fridge. We bring the rest.

At the end of last summer we decided we needed to cut down on all the things we 'needed'. So I made, a list. 4 pages long. The only thing we cut down on were the number of books for me to read.  6 instead of 10.

So here we are. 2nd day and 2nd day of high winds, whirling sand , flying chairs and waves?  Waves? The sea is supposed to be as flat as a millpond. I don't 'do' waves anymore. Had enough of them in NZ. This is the Med.

It's s end of season and there's a serious lack of 'essentials'.  No coke zero and no wine or raki in the subsidised supermarket. We had to make an emergency dash for a nearby Lidls this morning.

A local alien with a mug of red wine. No wine glasses this year.

Nothing much else to do anyway with this wind. If we can't swim there's nothing left besides  drink coffee, eat and gossip. K has found a few Navy friends for the gossip.  But they have their wives with them. I'm seriously antisocial. I'm on holiday. Small talk is not my forte.

I've retired to a distant table to 'work'.   Our rooms have virtually no internet signal so I have to come down to the cafeteria to write my blog.

I've downloaded a couple of games to play when I wake up at 2am.  I can't listen to YouTube and I can't turn on the light to read my book.

So there you have our lives for the next week or so.

No washing, no cleaning, No cooking. The only thing i have to do is sweep up some sand now and again. It always ends up on the floor of the room no matter how well we shower before returning.

    1. The zig zag ramp takes time but the other way is down a flight of steps and then up another flight. No good when carrying bags!!

  3. That sounds a bit like moving house each year. You make the room up nicely though.

  4. The ‘what to leave out’ routine goes on here as well when I’m putting things together for Bowen
This year we decided not to take the (toasted) sandwich maker…..and yes, several times we thought oh one would be good for a quick lunch snack. Doesn’t seem to matter what I leave out - we need it.

    1. Of course! You're exactly the same, except you need more electrical goods. We need those nice wine glasses. It tastes much better when it has a classy glass and not a mug!

  5. Sounds like you need a good rest after al the taking things up the ramp! Have you thought of getting a kindle? Not the same as books I know but is much easier for travel. Hope you have a restful time and the wind settles for you.

    1. I had a Kindle and it was perfect. It froze years ago. I must look into getting a new one.

  7. I'm sure the waves will calm. I don't like those white plastic chairs, We had two broken one's in France that I've been dying to throw out for years. We have now found some replacements. They are dark charcoal colour, and cost 5 Euros each at a shop called Gifi. They were the bargain of 2025.

    1. One of our chairs here is ready to go. It's being used as a clothes horse. We replaced all ours at home. Very dangerous!

  8. Only a man can say we don’t need all that. But we really do.
Strangely we always seem to have room for their beer 🍺

  9. Hope you are having a nice time away. B has similar options as K. B use to work for the NZ post office for years and also for chorus so we can get units/cottages for a good price when we go on holiday, nice places and it saves us money.

  12. Where are you on holiday? I have no idea. I don't mind waves, though we don't swim in the sea now. Too scared of sharks! Enjoy your holiday, and I hope the winds ease for you.

    1. Just up the coast from Athens. It's an old Navy base now a resort for retired officers, and during high season for those on active service
