A crew of municipal workers have trimmed all the tall tinder-dry grass on road sides. The grass verges of our road were so long it had almost narrowed to one way.
This year there is a gang of eco cleaners cutting low branches up in the forest and clearing all the dry vegetation underneath. They are always busy as we pass by and it looks as though they're doing a good job, trimming, cutting and hauling it away
Fire patrols by the Navy Base and volunteers are being carried out all through the night. The fire brigade has a fire engine parked in our area during the day and fire trucks patrol at night.
On days of searing heat and high winds there is a road block where the fire risk is greater. People are allowed to go up our mountain as far as the rural Paradise Taverna.. Further out are a few isolated houses, like ours, olive groves, a few rundown sheds for goats and pine forest. Residents are allowed in and out but names and number plates are noted.
Everyone else, including tourists wanting to go down to the beach are turned back.

It's great that efforts to prevent fires, especially near the villages of Greece and all it's islands. I hear that there is a wildfire east of Athens and of course the fire on Crete, and other islands. Although we have had a very hot few weeks, we did have rain last week which helped.
ReplyDeleteNext time you see them chipping the deadwood, ask them if you can have some ~ then haul your wheelbarrow up there!! They probably use them in parks, or maybe make them available to gardeners.
Fire is something to be feared and respected.
ReplyDeleteWe are fortunate here not to have such heat, although we often complain about that!
Good to see they are clearing the burnables on the ground without reducing the shade (and cooling effects) of the trees themselves. Stay safe and I imagine you are pleased to have numbers reduced on your remote road when the temps are so high.
ReplyDeleteIt’s scary these days. With climate change making it hotter at one end and colder at the other.
ReplyDeleteAt least you are clearing the undergrowth. We are not allowed to do that, and all grazing has been stopped.
So the ground is littered with lots of combustible growth
Yes I totally agree with the last meme lol
It sounds as though they are very efficient. Good to have the undergrowth cleared.
ReplyDeleteWe have a footpath that runs behind our house then continues through the woods. Men with tractors usually come along in Summer to trim the sides, and at the same time trim away all our Blackberries. I do wish they'd come later!!!
ReplyDeleteThank goodness the authorities have the foresight to manage undergrowth and trees. Fire catches and spreads so rapidly, it's terrifying.
