Flying the flag

 

28th of October is a Greek National day and my brother's birthday.
Long live my brother P and the  Democracy  of Greece




Most houses fly the greek flag for these national holidays.
This one is flying from an in-laws balcony in Athens



A neighbourhood flag



Down in the town. A flag blowing in the wind beside another of those little churches




And our own flag which K put up two days ago





Today we are down in town in our Sunday best waiting to see our grandchildren in the big parade.

      I got a short video of two of them. I never find a decent place for photos and usually they are gone before I've seen them but this time I did get a few

    If people put the national flag up in this country they get practically stoned. It is horrible that you can't even put your country's flag up in peace here. Have a great day and enjoy your National Day!

      Yes, it is horrible. I'm surprised there would be such strong reactions. I suppose the more mutli racial a country becomes the more complicated the feelings of where you belong.
      It used to be mandatory here but not any more. The younger generation is not so interested in flying the flag. One of our daughters does if we give her a nudge

      The whole island turns out for the short service on the waterfront and there's always wreath laying and the shcool parade accompanied by the Municipal band. Then its ouzo and later lamb chops with lashings of wine. Lucky it was a dry and fairly warm day.

    How different from the UK. Here the young are doing their best to make people ashamed of our flag (and of our heroic past).

      This year is a big year for greece. Celebration of the 200 years of freedom from the Ottoman Turks. Plenty of reason to fly the flag

      I guess there will be similar events taking place in Australia and America, wherever there are large greek populations
