Another view of Teacher's Island, Daskalio. There are other islands with similar names all over Greece. They were the out of the way venues for secret schools during the hundreds of years of Turkish occupation when it was illegal to teach the Greek language or history.
As you can see from this photo it is vaguely in the shape of a heart. It is nowadays promoted as the Island of Love, Eros, and a romantic setting for a wedding.
The island is not far from the coast and the grandchildren often row over there or even swim the distance for a picnic in the grounds of the little white church dedicated to the Virgin Mary
One of many ancient theatres in Greece. This is the Epidavros theatre not far from us . Their summer season of greek comedies and dramas has just finished
A rather different view of the island. It does rain here, sometimes.
Great photos.
ReplyDeleteI regret that we didn't get to see Epidavros on our visit. It would have been worth seeing but we struggled with the bus timetable and missed out.
A pity. Next time! It really is magnificent. We have been there many times
DeleteLook at that amazing theatre! We saw a few on our travels and they always amazed me.
ReplyDeleteThis one is the best even when it's full of tourists
DeleteI wondered why it was called teachers island. Now it makes sense
ReplyDeleteEven when it’s raining it looks beautiful
Thanks for sharing the pics
The island is another great spot to take visitors. Lovely for a swim and a picnic
DeleteThat ancient theatre would make a great venue for a Prog Rock concert like Pink Floyd or Kansas. Smashing photos Linda.
ReplyDeleteIt has fantastic acoustics. The sound would really carry you aeay
DeleteI remember visiting Epidavros when I stayed on Poros, a most impressive sight. We also visited Mycenae, another fascinating place.
ReplyDeleteYes, Mycenae is another place worth a visit. So many of them around here

ReplyDeleteAll wonderful, even in the rain.
Lovely in the rain. We've had a few drops but still no decent downpour
DeleteWow, you have burst my bubble. I was starting to think you never got rain!!
ReplyDeleteIt can even snow in winter. Summer has been so hot, I wonder if we are in for a freezing winter
DeleteThat amphitheatre is wonderful. What clever builders they were. Quite a big storm here last night, and maybe another tonight. Feels like the end of Summer.
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely the end of summer here too but no decent rain yet
DeleteWe had a deluge last night; I've never seen rain like it.
DeleteWhat a beautiful island! The amphitheatre says historic place. What a view.
ReplyDeleteThe theatre is one of the best. Still in use too
DeleteInteresting history and beautiful photos!
ReplyDeleteGreetings
DeleteWonderful theatre Epidavros. Amazing that it's so intact having been built 2500 hundred years ago. I wonder how many of our modern stadiums will last that long.....non I suspect! I remember sitting through a performance one summer evening, all in Greek, not understanding a word but still being entralled. The ruins of the Sanctuary of Asklepios nearby are also worth exploring. I wish we had had more time there but we went in winter and it was bl**dy cold!
ReplyDeleteThe marble tiered seats are as hard as stone lol And they keep the heat of the midday sun for a long long time.
DeleteSizzling in the summer, freezing in the winter. Thats greece. I remember that November cold. Chilled us to the bone
Thank goodness for greek wine which soon heats the blood. Pity they don't have that sober-driver rule here though
Deleteyou're very fortunate there that greece has a rich ancient history, no wonder it is a popular spot with tourists.
ReplyDeleteThe tourists came in droves this year. Thank goodness
