Do It Yourself

We've been asking for a mirror for the end of our road for months and it has finally arrived.  The big trucks delivering to the fish farm roar past the top of the road.  We have to poke our noses out to see if the way is clear and there have been a few close shaves.

The council arranged for the mirror arrived, we arranged to get it hung

At the same time we got a 'dead end' sign
Quad bikes and scooters sometimes roar down our road looking for a way to the beach and then a few minutes later noisly drive back up the slope in low gear.  At 3pm we've been jolted out of a sleepy siesta.  Just not on!

Now all we need a dozen or so STOP signs around the island so tourists, and locals, know exactly who has the right of way.  Where  a small back  road meets another small back road it's survival of the fittest, or the quickest.

  2. Why couldn't you erect the mirror yourselves? That 's what everyone does here. Or is that not the Greek way?

    1. Well I see you did erect it but I mean why not get it yourselves and eliminate the dangerous situation? We don't hang about waiting for councils here.

    2. The mirror costs 300 euros, the other sign probably about 50. The other houses on the road won't contribute do we waited for the council. This is the 2nd mirror to be put up so they are not over keen. The first one got smashed, by a stone, by a passing lorry, by a vandal, who knows

    3. Mirrors are extremely the everyday thing around here where the roads are dangerous and fast and narrow and blind and bendy. Everybody just buys and erects there own. They get chopped up by the hedgers when they come along and then we replace them. But they don't cost fancy money like 300 euros.

    1. It took us several years of asking before we eventually got a weight limit restriction placed on our lane. Huge dump trucks used to hammer down here as a shortcut and brought down many large overhanging branches from the trees. It is only a single track road with passing places and many pedestrians and cyclists had near misses. Eventuallt the sign was put up (but only after the nearby housing estate was finished, which was the cause of all the disruption in the first place!).

  4. A mirror, and interesting solution. Glad you finally got them to pay for it, since it's so expensive.

    How are you doing....?

  6. Think Rachel is right. You have got to do it yourself if you want something done. I can't walk along the country roads because they won't cut the overgrown hedges or reduce the speed. Oh to go back to horses and carts.
