Byways

Alley-ways, byways and many flights of steps

The green door at the top of these steps leads to the house of an aging english actress.  One of many ex-pats owning houses here

This small road is very very steep and there is a sharp right turn just in front of that open window.  I would hate to live in that house.  Any trouble with your brakes and you'd end up in their kitchen sink

On the right is a small white church.  Chapel maybe is a better description. The lane is too narrow for cars but motorbikes scoot down here easily

This is a short cut from the church to the harbour, pedestrians only.  Not for high heels though.

Steps, steps everywhere
Steps to carry your shopping up, and everything else for the house
Steps to carry your rubbish down

No wonder all the old ladies have bent legs and sore knees
They are all very fit though and clamber up steps like mountain goats leaving me puffing and sweating behind.  I have to stop every few yards and 'admire the view'.

You can never get lost.  There is always the sea sparkling at the
end of the alley way.  However, if you're looking for that white house with blue shutters where your friend is staying then you might be in trouble!

  1. She said it is near some steps and has a big pot outside... I would definitely have to wear trainers to get around.

    1. Trainers are the way I go! Most steps have no handrails either. Hard work.

  2. That short cut from the church to the harbour is what we call a 'Twitten' in Sussex. Don't use the word elsewhere, they wouldn't know what you were talking about.

  3. I would imagine that people are more fit living there. Do most people walk where they want to go? I pity the person with directional problems! -Jenn

    1. The older generation walk everywhere and they are very fit. Everyone who can rides a motrobike or scooter or like me a quad bike. They go most places but not ewverywhere. Some houses have no other access but a flight of steps. Thank goodness we had a road right outside the door!

    1. It is picturesque but everywhere you go it is downhill and then uphill. Beautiful pots of flowers and flowering shrubs at this time of the year. The steps are all whitewashed just before Easter and look much cleaner, a sparkling white

  6. Love the looks of all of these! But I'd never make it, with all those steps.

Since someone has lived there, all their life, I suppose if they just keep climbing, they can keep climbing. :-)

Oh no! You can't leave us in suspense. Who is the ageing English actress, who lives behind the green door???? Must tell! Must tell!!!! Must tell!!!!! :-)

    1. The older generation have indeed been climbing all their lives and don't think about the steps. Some are incredibly fit. They power walk up the hills.
The actress is Claire Bloom. She rents out the house most of the time I think but does come here now and again. My daughter is her accountant.

  7. They all look so picturesque.
Can't look back at the view doing steps as I have to do them briskly and in one go.
I would take in the view plenty of times walking just uphill though. Can't walk uphill very well.

    1. I don't mind hills, its the steps that kill me. There are always alternative alleyways that only the locals know. They can choose steps or hills.
      You muat be fit too!

    1. I used to haul a pushchair and two kids up and down all those steps and didn't think anything of it. I learnt quickly about the little alleyways and took shortcuts. Now days I think...how can I get there with the bike and always take the easiest route! Sometimes you just can't avoid steps though

    2. ...with the bike?! Gosh Linda, you must be very fit. x

  10. What a charming place to explore. I can't imagine a car fitting down that narrow area, I would've thought you would only have room to walk along there.

  11. Steps steps everywhere.... but I like places like these. The people also should be warm.
