Saint John....Agios Yiannis in greek
There are so many different St Johns. Not all are celebrated today
St John of the Fleas
Of the Fires
Golden Mouth
The Baptist
Theologian and Apostle
7th January is the big one.
Today is my son in law's name day
It was warm enough for a BBQ
Yiannis looking after his m in law
Opening the Prosecco
Galaktobouriko, sweet semolina pie. Really delicious and even better when served on a NZ Tui plate.
Thanks Julie
Thanks Yianni and Danae for a lovely day
There was music, there was talk but it wasn't just a loud babble. I enjoyed being able to take part in the conversations today
There is a saying here
'A house without a John (Yianni) is not a home'
Down in Australia my niece Gemma was celebrating her birthday today.
Many happy returns Gemma
So many of our family anniversaries fall on the same day.
It's not a coincidence. Close families celebrate together

My dad was a John too. A very lovely man.
ReplyDeleteGreat to remember your John. May he always live with love in your memory
DeleteAny excuse for a BBQ is a good excuse! Roll on Summer.
ReplyDeleteIt was perfect weather for a January BBQ. We didn't need jackets till almost dark
DeleteI would definitely have a hard time keeping to a diet if I lived in Greece
ReplyDeleteWe do love our food and drinks
I hope I can get back into my old routine now. The bbqed meat was really good. But I ate galaktobouriko and Yianni opened a bottle of Prosecco for me. Half of it is now in our fridge. This has got to stop!
DeleteThere always seems to be an excuse to celebrate - I like it!
ReplyDelete2 more Saints days coming up in 10 days. Fortunately no one in our Greek family is named after them.
DeleteBut there will be more!
We have a lot of John's in the family but none in this generation. We also have a lot of Richard's but no one seems to be carrying on either name sadly.
ReplyDeleteI have a brother called Richard. You're right there aren't many of them around now. John or Yianni is over popular here because the first son is named after their grandfather so these names get carried down.
DeleteNo fad names. Archer seems to be popular now and William has come back
Lovely to see the family gather together. We do not have any John's but do have two David's!
ReplyDeleteDavid has a name day. 1 November! Don't know if he's a Saint but definitely in the bible
DeleteEnjoy the celebrations. Did you cut the cake with the charms in it too?
ReplyDeleteWe cut about 5 cakes and loaves of bread!! Every family made their own and cut slices for all the extended family. No charms for me this year 😒
DeleteOooo a Tui melamine plate, how cool! LOL, I USED to collect melamine trays/plates, but not any more. I gave away over half my collection when we moved. Sad.
ReplyDeleteThese ones are so beautiful. A niece of mine brought 3 for me and my 2 girls. Love love love them
