There'll Always be an England.
This song kept on coming up on my youtube list today and I've just realised why. Tomorrow, 23rd April, is the Feast Day of Saint George. Saint George the Dragon Slayer is the Patron Saint of England.
It did cross my mind that maybe you're not allowed to celebrate this day any more with all the religious turmoil over there. But I see there was a parade by the Kings Guard and Horse and Cavalry on Saturday. There will be parades and celebrations all over the country, including Morris Dancing and Punch and Judy, they say on the net. You eat Toad in the Hole, Fish Pie and Fry-ups it seems.
Happy Name Day England.
The song 'There'll Always be an England' is a good stirring piece of music. A good old patriotic tune from days of old. Britain has a few of those. Britannia Rules the Waves comes to mind, and the hymn 'Jerusalem'.
23rd April is also the Name Day of my grandson George, who is, at the moment, doing his military service in the Greek Army. However this year his fiesta falls during Orthodox Lent so we'll be celebrating with him on the day after Easter, May 6th.

Thank, Linda. I am thoroughly enjoying 'There'll always be an England'! I have our St George's flag ready to fly above the arched gate tomorrow! The less we are 'supposed' to celebrate, the more determined I become TO celebrate my land. Our local pub also holds a St George's Day banquet each year. Great fun.

We always sang God save the Queen as well. I don't know when God defend NZ took over as our anthem
DeleteYour grandson is a good boy for doing his duty, sometimes I wonder if military service would be a good thing here for some young ones.

DeleteHardly a religious celebration (well not like saints days in Greece) and as for flying the flag it has been subverted somewhat to (questionably) represent a rather exclusionary point of view. We had neighbours who used to hang one out an upstairs window most of the year and were not the sort of people with whom we shared views on race and immigration. That is as politely as I can put it. BTW does Greece have a national saint? I don't recall such a notion but rather a saint per place or region. In Piraeus we had saint days for both Nicolaos and Spiridonis (depending on where your allegiances lay - being in shipping ours were with Nicolaos)
ReplyDeleteCities and towns have patron Saints. Piraeus is St Nikolas I think, Thessaloniki is St Demetrios, St Spiridon is Corfu, think the Durrells.
