Around town on the day before lockdown. We all knew it was coming so I masked up and dashed town into town, did essential business and dashed back again. These are the photos I took on that day
The little taverna which sells classic greek cuisine. Most of our family and many friends have eaten here.Typically greek. Wine from the barrel, dried bean stew and goats foot soup a speciality . Always seasonal and fresh cooked each morning in huge pots and pans which are on display so you can choose your dish.
The same taverna with its tables down the alley way.It always had these tables. Nowadays they are probably the most popular place to sit, out of the way
The little shop selling herbs and spices and local produce. If we want a 5 spice mix or a bunch of mountain herbs to make tea this is where we come
Fresh fish at a harbourside taverna. I hope they got eatenThe red fish on the right are scorpion fish, excellent for soup, dangerous to scale and gut. Those spines give nasty wounds
Another flight of steps
At the top of the stairs on the left a long time ago used to be a candle shop!. We had a non negotiable rota to ensure shutters were down in mid day sun. We always did it but owner forget her name forgot one afternoon, erm was melted mush!. 24, hour job re melting candles n making more. Dairy Queen ? Ice cream shop kept us going at the bottom of the stairs.
ReplyDeleteI remember the candle shop but it was actually at the top of another flight of steps. It could still be there because it sold all that orthodox religion stuff. Havent been up there for years.
DeleteThe cie cream shop didn't last long. It was a childrens clothing shop, could still be. The shops below those steps have changed hands a few times.
What a gorgeous town you live in - it reminds me of so many Greek places we've been. Good luck with the lock down.
ReplyDeleteTypical island greece. It is actually raining today. A real novelty for August. Easier to stay home!
DeleteLove the little alleyways and I too would choose to sit on the chairs and tables
ReplyDeleteAlthough I love just sitting and watching people so maybe sitting at the beach would be nice too
Those bags look great with the mati
Not a huge fan of stairs though
I actively dislike stairs. At least these have hand rails and are more or less even. I can drag myself up there more or less in one go. Our medical lab is up there and a few solicitors, and some souvenir shops for the fit.
DeleteI prefer to sit where I can watch people. This place does a lot of takeaways. Its cheap and traditional.
You will be fit walking up all those stairs, Poros looks like a lovely town. Not sure I would want to try those scorpion fish!! Stay safe.
ReplyDeleteThose are the easist steps. Some go straight up without a handrail. I'm glad I don't live up there and have to carry groceries.
DeleteThat looks delightful. As Kiwikid said the steps would make you fit.
ReplyDeleteIn our old place we lived up a hill and when the children were young I used to push a pushchair up and down hills and negotiate steps easily. Not any more. So many old women have knee problems after years of hauling produce up and down these steps. Now and again ok but daily does your legs in
DeleteHow do the locals view the use of English? Over here the government tried to outlaw it, but we see it more and more; it's almost as if many would prefer to speak English than French.
ReplyDeleteThe locals, even the elderly now all know a few words and are quite happy to try them out. A lot of words have been changed into gringlish. Its just the norm here. They do prefer that the expats try and learn greek though.
DeleteTourism means english has to be spoken.
Wow have you guys only just gone into lockdown? What is the rate of infection there btw? Stay safe aye.
ReplyDeletePartial lockdown. Masks inside and out, shops and bars close at 11 so there are no wild parties and drunken raves. Tavernas and cafes are open but chairs and tables reduced and special police squad to enforce it all. The island is done for this summer. 400 cars left yesterday. We were doing so well. And all this because, they say, of a young lad who returned from amercia and instead of staying home went to a pool party, which shouldn't have been allowed at all.
DeleteOh well. We are staying home and staying safe.
There are 30 cases and another 130 have been tested and are waiting results
DeleteScarily the 400 who left!. Hope they are all being tracked n traced n have to isolate for 14 days! Greece has done so well up until now!. Hope they don't spread it to the 4 corners of Greece!.x
