Small things in our life
I left K at the café for 5 minutes to cross the road and buy the daily bread. When I returned my chair was taken.
A passerby left 3 bottles of rosé on my chair. 3 plastic one and a half litre water bottles. Very local rosé, from grapes grown and trodden a few hundred metres from our house.
Our koumbaros (father of a godson) had promised us some of this year's vintage, saw K, and rushed off to deliver it
A home breathalyser test
The traffic police are getting stricter on the island. Breathalyser tests are few and far between but the fine has doubled and licenses are suspended
We tried it out at home. One small glass of raki and you're right at the limit.
The breathalyser is in the glove box of the car. It hasn't been used yet. The boy has decided to drink non alcohol beer when we're out, or let me drive.
'Times they are a changing'
The last 2025 Christmas card?
This one, posted in November from England, arrived on 29 April
The year of the Daddy-Long-Legs
No, they are Not giant mosquitoes
Those daddylonglegs are everywhere. They fly around the windows every evening, get inside and expire on the windowsill. We've never seen so many
![]() After our last heavy rainfall this fountain started flowing. It has been Completely dry for the last few years It's not just flowing, but gushing |

Times are definitely changing.
ReplyDeleteMany macho men around here insisted they drove better with a few drinks under their belt. It's finally become a mark of stupidity and recklessness.
DeleteYes, the times have definitely changed with regard to drinking and driving. If we go out we know that I can have one small wine or Stu can have a couple of beers over a few hours but that's it. Thankfully Uber is easy for people now. The young people seem to be incredibly responsible but it's the older folk who think they are invincible when it comes to drink.
ReplyDeleteYou're right about the age group. The older drinkers were lawless and don't like being reined in. Things are changing slowly. Wearing helmets is another law that's slowly being obeyed.
DeletePost from England fell off a cliff after Brexit. So many things ceased to arrive on time (by several weeks, even months). Did someone fix (or unblock) some pipes to the fountain?
ReplyDeleteJust the sheer volume of rain that fell and filled streams and wells. I suppose by mid summer it will be back to a trickle
DeleteI think that drinking and driving is not accepted as much nowadays, cars go a lot faster now.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many accidents and road deaths because of alcohol. Not so many on Poros which is a miracle. There's usually one fatal road accident here a year, involving a motorbike and lack of a helmet
DeleteWe had a beautiful ancient fountain in my nearby village in France; it was originally used by the whole village. Then someone built a house above it, and managed to direct the septic tank soakaway directly into the water supply. Now after about 700 years, the water is undrinkable. Progress!
ReplyDeleteThat is terrible! This fountain was supposed to have health benefits and is up by the Monastery, away from houses and sewage tanks. It always flowed through all the seasons, until 2 years ago
DeleteI remember when buying alcohol for “parties “ used to cost much more than the food.
ReplyDeleteBut now days everyone is much less likely to over indulge.
I’ve tried some alcohol free beers. They taste exactly the same to me
I drank only alcohol free one summer and I thought they tasted fine too. Now I try to keep off alcohol while out, especially in the summer heat. Just don't enjoy it quite as much . I still drink a good wine!
DeleteHow lovely to have locally-produced wine. It makes it more special to know exactly where it's come from.
ReplyDeleteThe fountain is working hard. It looks so pretty.
Our neighbours are very proud of their wine. They look after the grapes, pick and crush them. Real homemade wine. They make a few hundred litres
DeleteHow lovely to be given wine. And wow, that fountain is neat.
ReplyDeleteHi Chris! Thank goodness for good friends and neighbours. The wine was very drinkable. Was 🤣
