Greek Heatwave

The heat is tiring, even now at 8pm it's sweltering. The fan inside blows air so hot it feels as though we are living in a sauna.

We siested in an air conditioned bedroom and then emerged hoping to find a breath of cooler air on the terrace.  It's only slightly cooler.

I have no idea what the temperature is here. I'm watching the news. The heatwave is the main item. 45o in some parts of the country. Worse tomorrow.

It's fine if you're on holiday though I'm not so sure about the Brits. They're so white and then turn redder than lobsters. Painful. Not to mention dangerous. They don't seem to understand the strength of the sun.

At home clothes have to be washed, hung out and brought in, but not ironed. They dry in half an hour. Food has to be prepared, gardens watered. Most housework is put on hold. I mopped our tiled floors yesterday. Dust builds up when all the windows and doors are open. Not something that's on my 'to do' list.

Early this morning I made stuffed tomatoes and a zucchini. Quick and easy. Enough for 2 days and delicious eaten cold from the fridge.

Later we went down to the Navy beach.
Sun umbrellas and sun chairs free.
There was a breeze which I could almost call cool.
We stayed there till 2 and went home for a siesta.
Tomorrow we will probably do the same

I sit and read.
Love the way they put 'new' on the front cover. It was, back in 2009.
It's a good light read that I can put down and pick up between swims, people watching and sips of iced coffee.

  1. Oof... I cannot imagine surviving in that heat. I tend to wilt when it reaches more than 20°C here 😳

    1. I'm not sure I'll survive 🙄.
I didn't mind the heat 20 years ago but now I turn into a.... I used to say zombie but now I think I'm more of a slug. I just stop operating and slide slowly looking for a little relief

    3. My brother over in Perth has similar high temps. Nothing we can do about it but try and keep cool till it passes. Like you I hate the heat. Id much rather have winter......or preferably spring and autumn

  2. I recall those days and although we had perforated shutters and breezeways we didn't have air con so Mr T and I would put wet towels on the floor, wait for evaporation then lie on the cold spot🙄. Opening the doors to any breeze was like standing in front of a huge hairdrier - hotter than closed and shutters down. I the evenings I would spray water on the shutters to try and cool the balconies. (Brits are strange creatures at times.)

    1. You do what you can and you did everything lol Tigger must have been happier with cold tiles. I remember way back when we lived in Piraeus in a flat I used to put a sheet down and sleep on the tiled floor. It was much much cooler

  3. Nowhere near as hot as that here, but I do need to wear a hat when outdoors. Luckily our ancient sitting room is dark and cool; perfect for this time of year!

    1. You're lucky to have somewhere dark and cool. Our bedroom is cooler because it is shaded by lemon trees but not cool enough to be anywhere near comfortable just now

  4. I don't know how I would cope in those temperatures. Over 25o and I wilt. Low of 6 degrees this morning and, according to Metservice, a high of 14 although it was quite hot working in the garden in the sun. Much preferable to your temperature.

    1. A high of 14 is perfect for working in the garden. I watered at 8.30 and the sun was already burning.

  5. 45 is far too high - how can anyone function in that heat? Aestivation is the summer equivalent of hibernation - it would be good to do that! ☀️💤

    1. I want a house in the mountains for July and August. Aestivation? I'll go for that!

  6. I would go to a cooler place like Ireland when it gets so hot.

    1. Once upon a time we made for the mountains, above the snow level . Wouldn't it be nice.
      Or Ireland 😅 even better
