Last Friday I bought a few kilos of cheap apricots from the farmers market. 1euro a kilo for 'jam' apricots, 2 euros for the good eating ones.
Apricots ripen quickly and we ate a lot of the jam apricots but I did manage to turn some into jam and fill up 2 and a half jars. Apricots and strawberries make jam full of flavour.
I was going to buy a few more kilos again today and make jam and chutney. I was very surprised to see the price of the apricots had gone up. 3 euros for the eating fruit and 1.50 euros for the jam variety, ie not such good quality. Darn. These are in season now and the price should be going down. I didn't buy any more of them.
Most of this jam will go into a big jam tart called pasta flora which I'll give to my girls. Hopefully I'll be able to buy a few kilos cheaply next week and make more jam and that chutney.
Ooh, lovely. We just bought 800g of dried apricots for £7.00 !!!
ReplyDeleteHeavens to Betsy. Even in the winter our dried apricots are cheap. About 5 euros a kilo if I remember rightly. I made jam out of those too
DeleteApricot jam, delicious.
ReplyDeleteFull of flavour!
DeleteIt looks wonderful! We are still waiting for apricots to ripen here, but it shouldn't be too long.
ReplyDeleteOur prices at the grocery store are going up too.
Farmers markets are supposed to be cheaper and mostly they are and fresh produce. I dont why this seller decided to mark up the price. She has a monopoly I suppose.
DeleteWe still have stocks from last year, so I don't think we'll be making any this year. My wife made an Apricot Tarte Tatin recently; very good.
ReplyDeleteI made extra apricot jam in the winter with dried apricots. That and strawberry are the most popular flavours in our family.
DeleteWhat fabulous looking jam. We still have jam for England (from England actually) that moved here with us, but chutney is not a bad idea, we are running low. Last year I made an Asian style apricot sauce (like the plum sauce they use on duck pancakes) which is very tasty. I hope the price comes down again for you.
ReplyDeleteMmm an asian style apricot sauce. I'm googling that right away!!!
Deletemmm I like fresh apricots, perfect Summer fruit.
