A group of divers called 'Aegean Rebreath' , the municipality of Poros and local volunteers got together and cleaned all the rubbish from the bottom of Poros harbour.
What they recovered was amazing. A dozen or so car/boat batteries for a start. I presume those were thrown overboard by fishermen whose little-boat batteries had died. Chuck it into the sea and get another. That was the way of thinking of many of the older generation. Outa sight, outa mind. Throw your old oven down the cliff , followed by a dead donkey.
Ready to start. The little boat is empty but not for long
Someone has a sense of humour.
Artful arrangement
A couple of supermarket trolleys and a few bicycles
About 20 old tyres
Loading up for the landfill. From one rubbish tip to another
Apparently our young Mayor dived with them. They also removed all the nets stuck on the bottom. I hope the next clean-up shows that the people of (and visitors to) Poros have become a little more environmentally aware and less trash has been carelessly tossed into the Aegean.
Wonderful to do... Clean up.
ReplyDeleteBut heart rending, to think of all that, having been dumped into the sea. -sigh-
Older folk did it, but way too many of today's folk do it too. And now, we should know better.
Wonderful, wonderful work done!!!!!
I did blame the older generation but the middling ones are just the same. School kids are much more aware. They are actually been taught how to look after their environment.
DeleteWell done on the cleaning up. I love the sense of humour; even in this case a table was set...”Food for Thought”
ReplyDeleteGreetings Maria x
Good one Maria!!!
Deletethe best thing they could do is include the schools in seeing what is cleared up. there is nothing like a young family member to give you a stiff telling off for not looking after the environment. My uncle was told off by his grand daughter for not recycling properly and she told everyone at dinner how bad he was and magically he has now made a recycling centre outside the back door from old wooden pallets. you can teach old dogs new tricks!
ReplyDeleteA familiar tale!! Our grandkids are being taught at school about recylcling and looking after mother earth and we get talkings-to as well. We were given recycling bags by our grandkids and now we use them!!
DeleteI do hope they found a few old gold coins as well!
ReplyDeleteMy son-in-law was hoping they would find his expensive sunglasses which went overboard! They probably scared a few octopuses but any one finding gold coins kept that news to themselves!
DeleteNo Pirates chests? The sea is a massive dumping ground and sadly it's so easy to dump in it. Suppose it's always been like that.
