Raki

On one of our car trips to Nafplio we had time to stop at our favourite small taverna 'Rakomel', home of Raki, with excellent and authentic greek mezethes at a low price and good wine, ouzo or raki.

This is a sign inside the shop

Translation
Drink a glass of raki (grappa, pastis, ouzo, sambucca, arak )

The First glass gives you an appetite
The Second, health
A third, happiness
Fourth, success
A Fifth glass brings conversation
A Sixth verbosity
A seventh ends in a scuffle
The eighth glass brings the Police
The ninth glass a Judge
And the tenth a funeral.....

So we kept away from the raki and drank a half litre of wine
with a plate of black-eye peas dressed with vinegar, olive oil, and lots of onion and parsley (no garlic?)

Greek barrel wine is ordered by the kilo but it comes in a litre jug.

So I googled

Litres and kilograms are more or less equivalent when the substance measured is water, or in this case, wine.

  1. I don't know why but i prefer ouzo on any other kind of alcohol (even red wine).

    1. I do not like raki. I like ouzo but one glass is all I can drink. And you, how many? I prefer red wine myself

  3. Your final para has just preempted a piece that I was writing.

I was always a Retsina drinker in Greece. I really enjoyed it (unlike most people).

    1. Sorry I got in before you. After wondering for years why they always called for kilos of wine I finally googled it!

Retsina is fine ice cold in a greek taverna, in Greece. I find it doesn't travel very well.

  4. I like ouzo and in fact recently purchased a bottle in error. However I was reminded how much I like it.

    1. Well have one for me. I quite like it but it is the after effect which puts me off. I'm ok till I stand up

  5. A friend of ours likes to serve flaming zamboucas occasionally. They taste like black licorice. -Jenn

    1. Flaming sambouca. I guess it would light up quite easily being about 50% (or somewhere around there) alcohol. I've never tried sambouca but have heard that it is a lot like ouzo.

  6. ouzo and lots of mountain tea in the middle of the night does not agree with me. It could also have been the metaxa. Nah that tastes too good to be the head ache maker!!! lol

    1. Ouzo and metaxa on the same night? What were you expecting from the mountain tea? Either of those is deadly. Not the mountain tea obvioulsy but it doesn't work miracles lol

  7. Yep Retsina in a seaside taverna, with vines growing around ,on a warm evening wearing summer clothes, the smell of a barbeque wafting around is truly perfect, the resiny taste is just right!.
On a winters night with snow outside, log fire on not in Greece it is truly horrific!. Yuk. Maybe the saving a little water bottle of it for the right time the expectation was too much.

    1. It never tastes the same!! You need the ambience, the heat, the flies, the music....

  8. Nafplion is beautiful!. Walking up all the hundreds of steps to the castle used up a few calories, amazing view.
