The herd of rogue goats are still roving freely around the hills. First of all you sniff a certain 'ripeness' on the wind and then they amble into view. Their coats are getting shaggier and their horns decidedly longer
They had a time-out in the middle of the road just below our house. What surprised me was the guard dog just over that wall made not a sound. He usually goes wild with his barking when they're in his territory. Maybe this time there were just too many and too close for comfort.
Wild asparagus. If you know where to look there are good pickings just now.
We cut off the tender shoots and make them into an omelette
The lads from the electricity company came and replaced a few yards of cable and left this sitting on the edge of the road. One of the coils must have fallen and broken as it is piled in pieces. I'm surprised someone hasn't grabbed the wood already.
These big wooden coils are left there till they rot. We picked up one a few years ago, twice the size of this small cable reel/drum. I had a brilliant idea to put it in the back garden and use as a table.
It weighed a ton and took four hefty men to lift it on the back of a pick-up truck. When we got it home it was too big and too heavy to get over the wall into the garden. K took it to pieces and the two big circular pieces ended up tied outside to our railings for a couple of years. We couldn't get anyone to take them away and our neighbour, downhill, was worried that they would come loose and roll down into his house.
Eventually we did find a sucker to take them away, after being lifted once again by four strong pre-hernia males into a farm truck. What we needed was a rugby team, or at least those usually very hefty backs. They would have manhandled it all easily over the fence, up the steps, across the balcony and away under the walnut tree to make a little oasis for me.
I also see here some of those coils that no body takes because they are so heavy.
ReplyDeleteThey are extremely heavy. Usually they stay but by the road till they rot but I was determined to have one. Bad idea!
DeleteThose goats make it seem very Greek and as it should be on a greek island. You and your family probably think it not so! The wood on the side of the road would also have disappeared quickly here too.
ReplyDeleteThe wood on the side of the road has disappeared now but the coil is still there.
DeleteGreece and goats go together. I love watching them but few fields are fenced in and they do a lot of damage. Know one seems to know where this herd came from. Hunters are popping them off one by one but there are still twenty or more roaming around.
Wild asparagus yum, bet that tastes delicious and very flavoursome. Last I bought from Tesco we as so so bland.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy.
Friends have given us quite a few bags of asparagus this year. We only eat the tender tips and they do taste quite strong.
DeleteThose goats look huge!. Surprising that no one knows who they belong to on a small island like Poros.
ReplyDeleteIs the aroma of barbied goat wafting around the Island?.😀
Lol... I heard a few more shots this morning so I guess someone will be eating well tonight.
DeleteThey appeared out of nowhere last summer. There are a couple of big goat herds over on this side of the island and it is thought a few escaped and multiplied. Certainly no one is saying they own them . One of the guys down at Vagionia tried to enclose them but feeding and watering them was too expensive
What a great picture of the goats. Blogging sure makes you think about life more closely and take pictures that you may not have taken before.
ReplyDeleteMy other half would have been up there with the chain saw and cut the big coil reel up. Wood around here like that would have had everyone walking off with a piece or 2.
Is the economy getting any better over there do you think? I am fearing the worst with Brexit at the moment as they seem to just be squabbling. Britain is a democracy and the voters said they want out. Why are they debating it? The people decided. Good or bad who knows. Lets get on with it
Our economy is the same as it has been for at least the last five years. Pm keeps on saying that unemployment is down and the economy is growing but it is just words. Pensions still being cut, jobs impossible to find and grexit very much still on the table. We've just got used to it all now and don't fall into a deep depression every time the bills come in.
ReplyDeleteDemocracy??? That's just to keep the masses happy. It's those bloody politicians who decide all by themselves.
Great idea. But yup theory is alway a little different to reality lol what about chopping it for firewood?
ReplyDeleteYup. Know that smell of goats. I actually like it lol I know. I'm just not right lol
Those coils are extremely well built. It took hours to take the ends off and the bits in between were very solid bits of hard woo. Don't think we had a chainsaw back then otherwise it would have gone for firewood
