A wintery Vagionia beach.
All the chairs and tables stacked in front of the bar
An empty beach. Not even much rubbish. A good north wind usually blows straight in here and brings anything that is floating in the sea, from old shoes to large plastic containers and even a wallet or two.
Summertime! It won't be long now. The beach and bar should be up and running by Easter. Crazy English and Scandinavian tourists may even try swimming. Not the Greeks. They'll still be in their winter woolies.
These are Phosphorus sticks which fishermen use to see their nets at night... and then throw in the sea.
There were a few fishermen returning from an early morning fishing trip and this young man preparing to launch his kayak
The beach is a good place for Clean Monday kite flying and bonfires on the beach.
I think that to see a greek island off season is like being in a basckstage at a show.I like it very much.
ReplyDeleteYes indeed, and the show will be starting very soon. April and May rehearsals and then the show gets more and more people!
DeleteYup. Too cold for Aussies too!
ReplyDeleteA bonfire on the beach sounds like an excellent idea!
This beach is way out the back of beyond. A law unto itself. Probably can't light fires on nz beaches either. Rules rules rules....and elsewhere they are obeyed
DeleteLove the sound of bonfires on the beach, we can't do that here sadly. Very cold, wet and windy, spring still feels a long way off xx
ReplyDeleteFires can be lit till the end of April . This beach is way out the back of beyond.
DeleteSpring has definitely arrived here. Amazing the difference in temps in one week. Come and warm your bones
I like off season, empty places. Neither of us like crowds, far too used to big empty fields around here so empty would suit us. When we lived right on the coast I would never go down to the beach in summer, we left that to the tourists.
ReplyDeleteps Definitely no swimming in winter though, I'm not that tough.
I agree. Winter beaches are so much more interesting too. Never know what you'll find
DeleteI can't really tell, but it looks like that isn't a sandy beach. Is it pebbles or broken shells? That's funny about Greeks not going in the cold water. Friends of ours (also Canadians) travelled to Greece a few years ago and they were the only ones in the water! -Jenn
ReplyDeleteIt is a pebbly beach. In fact a lot of beaches are here but truckloads of sand are dumped on them at the beginning of every summer.
DeleteMy kids start swimming in April but most wait until July...like me
Have you never thought of getting a metal detector and finding all the coins left on the beach? Your beaches look cleaner than our beaches in Ireland with little plastic.
ReplyDeleteThere probably are loads of coins around the organised part of beaches..and keys. Grandkids would love that. Must Google metal detector. Probably too expensive.
DeleteThere was little plastic this year on the beach, except for drinking straws in every imaginable colour
Our nephews here go to the beach all through the year in camper vans and now with kids of their own and meet up for weekend parties.
ReplyDeleteThey surf and party and have fires and the police don't seem to take much notice of them. The beaches are pretty much deserted until July and August when the schools are out in any case and mostly they are where nobody else can find them, a bit like yours. Like the other week a dog walker found £50M of cocaine, remember!
Did the dog walker get a reward?? Amazing find!
DeleteSurfies are in the water all year round!! I know, my younger brother is one. In the water in a wet suit in winter. Watching the waves from his front balcony every morning before he goes to work.
The beach for them is a way of life
We went to a surfies wedding a couple of years ago. Lots of surfies dressed up and very casual and wedding was in the church on the cliffs at Happisburgh here where the church will one day fall into the sea. He is one of the friends of Peter's nephews and they go out in wet suits all year round. They all have babies now and so they can't go off round the world like they used to so they stick to camper vans and go local. When I was growing up I had no idea this coast was good for surfing but it is! I am not sure about the dog walker but I reckon she ruined the drug pick-up that morning!
DeleteSounds like surfies are the same all over the world!
DeleteWe have homes in Brighton UK (which we haven't visited for years), and I love going down to the beach. We never know what's going to be swept-up; I remember a whole ship load of cut timber arriving once, but the authorities soon closed off the beach to looters!
ReplyDeleteBeach combing is wonderful, Especially after a storm. You need those big pacific and Atlantic waves. They bring in loads of treasures
DeleteOh the most beautiful beach and surrounding countryside!.
ReplyDeleteCan almost smell the Forrest air, hear the crickets and feel the breeze!.
Is there any chance of a photo from the land looking out to the bay?.
It is truly beautiful, remember sitting there just being and staring straight ahead.
Kirrie x
I'm sure I have some photos, otherwise i'll take a couple.
ReplyDeleteThere is nearly always a breeze there...an oasis in midsummer...except for the weekend crowds
