Cousin Roula has almost sold out. We bought the last of the tomatoes and mandarines. The tomatoes are out of season and were soapy. I made them into a sauce with onion and garlic.
Roula is always smiling and ready with a joke .
She spends hours out in the fields gathering and cleaning wild greens which the Greeks love, picking citrus fruit, harvesting olives, planting, weeding and setting up a market stall four days a week.
I think this is the first time I've ever seen Greeks wearing scarves etc. May I ask that you consult Roula about Olive preparation when the time comes. I'm really looking forward to preparing my own (if we're lucky).
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about Roula, she is out from very early morning till afternoon at these markets. Must truly have been freezing during our snowy days and in summer she goes a dark brown from the sun. Her husband goes to a cafe and sits drinking beer!
ReplyDeleteShe would be delighted to tell you about her olives. They always give us a couple of plastic bottles of her olives, as does Vaso, and we preserve our own.
Good on her for having a go at looking after her family
ReplyDeleteI think next time I visit Greece I'll be coming in the winter. I'm much better in the winter.
Spring is best! March, April, may. It's warmer and so green.
DeleteI have 3 olive trees near my front door, i always let the neighbors to pick them, too lazy to preper them my self. I like so much wild greens and try to find them here in the winter.I wonder if some of our wild greens are the same.
ReplyDeleteI bet your wild greens are very similar to ours. There is a huge variety here and I only know a few of them. I'll try and take some photos. Dandelions are much loved here...before they flower.
DeleteYour country is known for its olives. I think you have some of the oldest trees..preserving them is easy, but you have to pick them first!
I think you can make Dandelion root tea and the leaves can be ate too. How much is a glass of beer on your Greek Island?
ReplyDeleteGreeks love boiled dandelion leaves with lemon juice and olive oil and they drink the water it was boiled in. Supposed to put hairs on your chest lol
DeleteGlass of beer, 330 ml, 2-2.5 euros, maybe 3, depending on which cafe youre sitting at.
I wish our markets were in such a beautiful setting! I've just been reading a very old recipe for brewing dandelion roots and leaves into a miracle cleaning liquid...I'll give it a go and let you know.
ReplyDeleteCleaning fluid???? Greeks would be horrified lol, they think the juice from boiling the greens is a miracle elixir for good health
ReplyDeleteBut please do tell how it works!
DeleteAs soon as I can remember which old book the recipe is in, I'll make a brew and try it out!
