Headlines today in Greece.
- Snow sweeps Greece
- Snowfall turns Greek islands white
- Heavy snowfall causes problems all over the country
The main roads north of Athens were closed because of heavy snow. A state of emergency was declared on the islands of Skopelos (Mama Mia) and Alonysos. The islands are without power or water and in some places with almost 2 metres of snow.
Villages are snowed in, schools are closed. The archeological site of Knossos in Crete is covered in snow. And the cold snap will continue for a few more days.
All we got were snowflakes but even that was exciting. The hills opposite were covered in a white blanket and the grandchildren and their parents went across to the mainland and up into the foot hills to play with the snow.
In the hills opposite Poros. Behind the very happy children you can see the sea and the peninsular of Methanon.

The girls snowman. The boys snowman had some rude parts (typical for small boys) so I'm not allowed to show you all a photo of that.
Our xmas decorations were taken down days ago but are finally being put away in the store cupboard above the bathroom. Some of the shiny red balls which were put up by tall grandchildren are still hanging there awaiting tall grandchildren to come and take them down. As we put the xmas boxes away in storage we take down the boxes of carnival costumes and deocrations.
Carnival has already started in New Orleans and I'm sure in Rio. Orthodox Easter Sunday is on the 16th April this year in Greece, and it looks as though it falls on the same date in the protestant/catholic world as well. I must check up on that. They fell on the same date last year too. Most unusual.
Terrible joke from a xmas cracker -
- What did Santa say when his toys misbehaved?
- Toys will be toys

Lovely snowman. Snow can be wonderful and fun if you don't usually receive snow where you live. Everyday, it gets a little monotonous. -Jenn
ReplyDeleteSomething novel for us, a damned nuisance for you! Cant imagine what it would be like to be snowed in. I think I would be fine as long as I was warm but K would be like a caged tiger prowling around the house spouting greek oaths! We haven't been out for two days but have at least had visitors and have a car available. Give me my knitting and a tablet and leave me alone lol. I did make spanakopitta today. One of my best!
DeleteIt is snowing now and I went out to take photos. Very slippery. Dangerous stuff this snow!!
DeleteI've seen some of the snow some of Europe is getting, sounds really bad. Winter has continued to be quite mild here in the U.K., though your cold snap is expected here too xx
ReplyDeleteAll of the Balkans, turkey is covered and more coming. Doesn't happen often here. It is snowing now and I'll put some photos on the blog tomorrow. Beautiful.....when it happens now and again.
DeleteEnjoy your warmer weather!
I'd gladly swap snow for this weather. It's nicer today so Ive opened doors and windows for fresh air
ReplyDeleteHope the weather turns back to normal for you all soon
We both had extremes of temperatures. I was talking with my girls and remembered having a similar snowfall about 12 years ago. I remember driving home late at night after babysitting and the snow was so thick I could hardly clear the windscreen to drive. Like today, the sun came out and in less than 24 hours it had all melted.
DeleteHope you get a cooling breeze
Rain here this morning. I'm hoping it'll stop before I have to take the dog out.
ReplyDeleteYou finally got some rain. I hope it does stop for the dog's sake! Heavy rain at night with nice sunny days is what we need.......anyone listening??
DeleteIts turning cold here. Love the little snow man
ReplyDeleteThe kids had loads of fun making it!! Snow was so much fun for them
