Poros is often described as Little Venice? And I always think 'Why?' Because of the narrow Strait between the island and the mainland or because of the narrow canal dividing the 2 islands. Or both? Neither of them make Poros into a Greek Venice.
The canal...
Canale Stretto
This is the 'narrow canal' dividing the small island with its main harbour and old town
And the larger island with its pine forests, beaches and tourist hotels.
Blink and you've missed it.
It gets stilted up in winter and has to be dredged. Only small fishing boats can use it, the fishermen ducking down as they pass under the bridge.
Looking towards the harbour for small fishing boats
The Grande canale
Between the island on the left and mainland on the right
The orange arrow shows the position of the narrow canal dividing the 2 islands
Spheria... the island in the foreground with its harbour and old town
Kalavria is the larger but less populated island

Very Italiano!
ReplyDeleteSome people think it is. How many places though are compared with Venice.
DeleteThat's a surprise Linda.I don't know how many times we must have crossed that canal and I never realized there were two islands but it's obvious from the aerial photo. After quite a few false starts I think I've finally how to comment on your posts.
DeleteWelcome dear Bro. Not many realise it's 2 islands. I point it out as we go over the bridge but by the time they blink we're over it. You have to walk the shoreline to see it properly.
Deletewell not quite Venice, but I bet it smells nicer.
ReplyDeleteWhen my sister in law , her kids and I visited Venice the gondola man didn’t sing. So we did.
We didn’t sound so good and we only knew half the words to the song. But we had fun
😅 Sometimes it smells worse! Our sewage system is under constant repair.
DeleteLol for the singing. Our family gondalier doesn't sing but he blasts music out of the speakers.
The nearer of the two islands looks OVER-POPULATED. I would definitely live on the other one.
ReplyDeleteThe small island is full of alleyways and narrow steps. Everyone hears everyone else's business. I'm glad to live on the other half
DeleteLots of water and small craft so I suppose that makes it Little Venice. Very attractive.
ReplyDeleteSpheria is properly crowded, isn't it? Wow.
ReplyDeleteI like where you live, at least it's not far from the mainland, have a nice weekend.
ReplyDeleteWell your explanation certainly makes it sound like Little Venice is an apt description and the photos bear this out. I am certainly reminded of Venice when I look at it.
ReplyDeleteI never saw that canal and didn't realize it was quite so small. Yes there are lots of Luttle Venices about (even London has one!)
ReplyDeleteWow how neat to see how the islands 'fit' together, but not. I love where you live and hope to visit one day... once Trump is no longer trying to cause WW3!
