Away

Agia Marina tou Naftikou

or in English our Navy holiday resort. We are here.

Hooray...I think

A long 4 hour drive was uneventful.  Traffic minimal

And we arrived at our room to find this....

I dragged 6 heavy bags, pillows, sheets, towels, clothes, shoes, books up to the 2 floor, via the lift, to find a broken lock
The room they reassigned us was on the ground floor of the next door building
Ye gods and little fishes
While K went to get the key for the other room I dragged all the bags back down and reloaded the car
It was a long day before we got settled

But worth it

After a meal in the restaurant we sat on the balcony and opened a bottle of 2023 red
And listened to the crickets, the soft sound of distant  voices and the  repeating call of the scops owl
It's my idea of peace to sit on the balcony and enjoy the night sounds and watch the lights of planes descending into Athens airport

The resort itself is descending into disrepair
The grass uncut, the cafeteria with despicable coffee
Not what it used to be

The long grass reminded me of paspalum, grasses with long sticky fronds, which grow in the warm summer in wild unmown  gardens in NZ
The first time I'd thought of that stuff in many years

  1. Enjoy your holiday. A pity the resort is deteriorating.

    1. It was always very well looked after, grass mown, watered, edges clear. I'm not sure what's happened

  2. It still looks lovely though. Beautiful despite the despicable coffee.

    1. It's still green and refreshing. But that coffee.... absolutely abominable

  3. Shame the resort is not being looked after - I remember the paspalam.

    1. Paspalum stuck to your legs as you walked through it. Nasty stuff. This long grass is not paspalum but for some reason it just came to mind.
      Kiwi kid-S lol

  4. It sounds as if you need to write a short note to whoever organises the resort. A broken lock and unkempt grass are not expensive to remedy. It seems like bad management.

    1. The Navy no longer
We hope longer takes on so many conscripts and we can see the results. There used to be groups of young guys repairing and cleaning all over the resort. The cafeteria is run by a private company. They obviously made their money in high season and can't wait to close up.
We hope the Navy doesn't give it up altogether.

    2. Such a shame when everything in life is measured against a money value - costs too much or isn't making enough money, so cut it off, close it down, or run it down. Enjoy the sea and the weather. They can't base that on a costs/returns analysis.

  5. I know that type of grass you are talking about, so nice when it's whispy in Summer, hope you enjoy your holiday but a broken door lock is not good.
