The sea level on the island has been rising and falling for the last 3 weeks. This is the harbour road at its worst. Sea water is lapping harbourside cafeterias and has risen even more since this video
These high tides are occurring all over Greece. Some say it's because of the strong south winds or the alignment of the sun and the moon. The Mediterranean Sea doesn't have dramatic tide fluctuations . Changes in atmospheric pressure and high winds though can make a difference.
This present phenomenon has Not been caused by climate change, they say
However sea levels have risen 10-15cms in the last century. As sea levels rise this flooding will occur more frequently
It has happened before and it will happen again
Gull walks on water
Boat or car parking?
This is the centre of town and the parking area is usually full of motorbikes, cars and delivery vans, not to mention pedestrians
A Venetian canal?
Instead of a gondola transport is by paddle board
Further down the waterfront
That's the church of the Evangelists
Fortunately, like most churches, it's protected from the flood waters
by a flight of steps leading up to the front door
Like that gull this boat will soon be floating on land
Further out of town at Neorio the sea has surrounded this bench which is usually a metre or two inland
But that was yesterday, last night
The wind changed to strong northerlies. In just a few hours harbourside flood waters receded
The parking area dried up
However the sea water is coming and going
One minute it's dry my daughter says and in 10 minutes it's flooded again
We went down to shop today but kept down the other end of town where the sea hasn't yet washed over the road.
The sea is rough today
We are having days of sunshine followed by rain and strong winds

First the Iberian peninsula, now you. Such an over abundance of water...
ReplyDeleteAt least we have plenty for the desalination plant 😅
DeleteStrange to see Poros streets / carpark covered in water! Can't imagine the sunny island looking like that
ReplyDeleteIt can be so different in winter. Absolutely no yachts tied up to the wharf, flooded streets but the sun is still shining (today) and the island will be full of cars this long weekend
DeleteI always gave my children two bits of advice when house-buying. Buy a house on High Ground, and buy one of plain brick or stone; un-painted. The latter was to avoid the cost of re-painting, the former is obvious.
ReplyDeleteIt's certainly something to consider seriously but also to look at that high ground. Landslides seem to be more common too
DeleteThat is a lot of water, does this always happen in winter. And how quickly it drained away.
ReplyDeleteIt happens every few years but usually the water disappears in days not weeks. Amazing how quickly it dried out
DeleteIt’s been happening on my dads family island.
ReplyDeleteEvery now and again they post pictures.
Yes it is going to get worse. And as most of the men in power refuse to acknowledge climate change I don’t have high hopes of it getting any better any time soon
Some islands had serious flooding from the rise of sea, water. Ours was really quite mild. They're cleaning up today
Deletethe Neorio scenery reminds me of New Zealand beaches. I wonder if it's anything to do with El Nina? Our Summer in general was quite wet until late January.
ReplyDeleteYou've had a very odd summer. Our winter has been wet but not very cold. Good for the earth. El Nino? I don't know if it affects us as well
DeleteThe Balric is similar - a confluence of low pressure (barometric) and wind direction can pile the sea up and flood a usually well above water edge somewhere. Venetian canal indeed...
ReplyDeleteI am glad to hear you guys are having plenty of moisture. It has been very dry here ~ usually we get enough to keep the grass and trees alive, but this year we have been watering all winter.
ReplyDeleteOur spring winds have started up though, so when you gaze out at the west mesa, it looks like a brown cloud has enveloped it. And I won't even mention the dust! I dust everything and two days later it looks like I did nothing.
