Grow Darn You

I've been reading a lot recently about growing sweet potatoes

 I don't want a crop of them.

They are supposed to grow, like an avocado pip, in a glass of water and turn into a house plant

This is what it's supposed to look like after only a couple of weeks

The reality...

After a month....

Growth?
Zilch, diddly squat, nothingness

I've googled.
'Choose a sweet potato with multiple eyes
All you need is warm water, a glass jar and sunlight'
They say

'Suspend your sweet potato in a glass of water by poking it with toothpicks'
They say

'Make sure it's submerged.
Put it in a sunny window
Refresh the water every few days
Watch as it grows over the next 2 to 3 weeks'
They say

I did all that. Plenty of sunlight.  I waited. I changed the water

My daughter Elli has done the same
Zilch there as well

Any ideas?

I suppose I should buy another sweet potato
We get red and white varities
I'll try a white one

    1. I'll have to try another variety. I suppose I'd better eat this one lol

  2. Perhaps it came from a crop that has been chemically treated to prevent sprouting?

    1. You could be right. I'll have to see if our grocer has some local ones. Maybe they're not sorayed

    1. I'll leave this one in water for another month. I know avocados sometimes take a very long time to sprout

    1. Yes, indeed. She was the first to tell me it had probably be sprayed. Thank you my dear other sis in law

    1. I'll look for a better bulb, maybe one with a few sprouts. And maybe at the end of the month. Cold days will be over. I hope

  6. They might have been treated with something to stop them sprouting (spuds used to be treated like that here - don't know if it's still on use - probably slowly poisoning us all if it is). Try cutting it in half first. Possibly it only sprouts from one end - try sticking both halves of the cut on in water and see if one sprouts? I've no other suggestions.

    1. Im sure it's the spray. I'll see if I can find different ones. And I'll try the other end. You never know. Thanks

  7. I wondered if it would work with the other end in the water. Just a thought.

  8. Like many Potatoes, they may have been 'dipped' in order to STOP sprouting.

  9. I too think they have been treated.
Maybe try and purchase a seed potato on line.
